Thetermcloneisderivedfromκλών,theGreekwordfor"twig,branch",referringtotheprocesswherebyanewplantcanbecreatedfromatwig.Inhorticulture,thespellingclonewasuseduntilthetwentiethcentury;thefinalecameintousetoindicatethevowelisa"longo"insteadofa"shorto"[citationneeded].Sincethetermenteredthepopularlexiconinamoregeneralcontext,thespellingclonehasbeenusedexclusively.

Cloninginbiologyistheprocessofproducingpopulationsofgenetically-identicalindividualsthatoccursinnaturewhenorganismssuchasbacteria,insectsorplantsreproduceasexually.CloninginbiotechnologyreferstoprocessesusedtocreatecopiesofDNAfragments(molecularcloning),cells(cellcloning),ororganisms.
