Itwasattheageof20thatHawkingfirstnoticedsomethingwaswrongwithhim.Hestartedtobump(撞)intothings.WhenhevisitedhisfamilyatChristmastime,hismotherwassoworriedthatshemadehimseeadoctor.Hawkingwassenttohospitalfortests.Finally,theresultcameback.Hehadmotorneurondisease,anincurableillnesswhichwouldmakehimunabletospeak,breatheormovewithoutthehelpofamachine.Doctorssaidtheyhadnowaytohelphim.Hewoulddiebeforehewas23.

Atfirst,Hawkingbecameverydepressed.Afterawhile,hebegantoseehislifeinadifferentway.Ashelaterwrote,“Beforemyillnesswasdiagnosed(诊断),Ihadbeenveryboredwithlife.Therehadnotseemedtobeanythingworthdoing.ButafterIcameoutofhospital,IsuddenlyrealizedthattherewerealotofworthwhilethingIcoulddo.”Hawkingmarried,foundajobatCambridgeUniversity,Andhadthreechildren.Healsowentontodosomeofthemostimportantscientificresearch.
