igrewuponasteadydietofsciencefiction.inhighschool,itookabustoschoolanhoureachwayeveryday.andiwasalwaysabsorbedinabook,sciencefictionbook,whichtookmymindtootherworlds,andsatisfied,inanarrativeform,thisinsatiablesenseofcuriositythatihad.

andyouknow,thatcuriosityalsomanifesteditselfinthefactthatwheneveriwasntinschooliwasoutinthewoods,hikingandtakingsamples--frogsandsnakesandbugsandpondwater--andbringingitback,lookingatitunderthemicroscope.youknow,iwasarealsciencegeek.butitwasallabouttryingtounderstandtheworld,understandthelimitsofpossibility.

andmyloveofsciencefictionactuallyseemedmirroredintheworldaroundme,becausewhatwashappening,thiswasinthelate60s,weweregoingtothemoon,wewereexploringthedeepoceans.jacquescousteauwascomingintoourlivingroomswithhisamazingspecialsthatshowedusanimalsandplacesandawondrousworldthatwecouldneverreallyhavepreviouslyimagined.so,thatseemedtoresonatewiththewholesciencefictionpartofit.

andiwasanartist.icoulddraw.icouldpaint.andifoundthatbecausetherewerentvideogamesandthissaturationofcgmoviesandallofthisimageryinthemedialandscape,ihadtocreatetheseimagesinmyhead.youknow,wealldid,askidshavingtoreadabook,andthroughtheauthorsdescription,putsomethingonthemoviescreeninourheads.andso,myresponsetothiswastopaint,todrawaliencreatures,alienworlds,robots,spaceships,allthatstuff.iwasendlesslygettingbustedinmathclassdoodlingbehindthetextbook.thatwas--thecreativityhadtofinditsoutletsomehow.

andaninterestingthinghappened:

thejacquescousteaushowsactuallygotmeveryexcitedaboutthefactthattherewasanalienworldrighthereonearth.imightnotreallygotoanalienworldonaspaceshipsomeday--thatseemedprettydarnunlikely.butthatwasaworldicouldreallygoto,righthereonearth,thatwasasrichandexoticasanythingthatihadimaginedfromreadingthesebooks.

so,idecidediwasgoingtobecomeascubadiverattheageof15.andtheonlyproblemwiththatwasthatilivedinalittlevillageincanada,600milesfromthenearestocean.butididntletthatdauntme.ipesteredmyfatheruntilhefinallyfoundascubaclassinbuffalo,newyork,rightacrosstheborderfromwherewelive.andiactuallygotcertifiedinapoolataymcainthedeadofwinterinbuffalo,newyork.andididntseetheocean,arealocean,foranothertwoyears,untilwemovedtocalifornia.

sincethen,intheintervening40years,ivespentabout3,000hoursunderwater,and500hoursofthatwasinsubmersibles.andivelearnedthatthatdeep-oceanenvironment,andeventheshallowoceans,aresorichwithamazinglifethatreallyisbeyondourimagination.naturesimaginationissoboundlesscomparedtoourownmeagerhumanimagination.istill,tothisday,standinabsoluteaweofwhatiseewhenimakethesedives.andmyloveaffairwiththeoceanisongoing,andjustasstrongasiteverwas.

butwhenichoseacareerasanadult,itwasfilmmaking.andthatseemedtobethebestwaytoreconcilethisurgeihadtotellstorieswithmyurgestocreateimages.andiwas,asakid,constantlydrawingcomicbooks,andsoon.so,filmmakingwasthewaytoputpicturesandstoriestogether,andthatmadesense.andofcoursethestoriesthatichosetotellweresciencefictionstories:

terminator,aliensandtheabyss.andwiththeabyss,iwasputtingtogethermyloveofunderwateranddivingwithfilmmaking.so,youknow,mergingthetwopassions.

somethinginterestingcameoutoftheabyss,whichwasthattosolveaspecificnarrativeproblemonthatfilm,whichwastocreatethiskindofliquidwatercreature,weactuallyembracedcomputergeneratedanimation,cg.andthisresultedinthefirstsoft-surfacecharacter,cganimationthatwaseverinamovie.andeventhoughthefilmdidntmakeanymoney--barelybrokeeven,ishouldsay--iwitnessedsomethingamazing,whichisthattheaudience,theglobalaudience,wasmesmerizedbythisapparentmagic.

youknow,itsarthurclarkeslawthatanysufficientlyadvancedtechnologyisindistinguishablefrommagic.theywereseeingsomethingmagical.andsothatgotmeveryexcited.andithought,wow,thisissomethingthatneedstobeembracedintothecinematicart.so,withterminator2,whichwasmynextfilm,wetookthatmuchfarther.workingwithilm,wecreatedtheliquidmetaldudeinthatfilm.thesuccesshunginthebalanceonwhetherthateffectwouldwork.anditdid,andwecreatedmagicagain,andwehadthesameresultwithanaudience--althoughwedidmakealittlemoremoneyonthatone.

so,drawingalinethroughthosetwodotsofexperiencecameto,thisisgoingtobeawholenewworld,thiswasawholenewworldofcreativityforfilmartists.so,istartedacompanywithstanwinston,mygoodfriendstanwinston,whoisthepremiermake-upandcreaturedesigneratthattime,anditwascalleddigitaldomain.andtheconceptofthecompanywasthatwewouldleapfrogpasttheanalogprocessesofopticalprintersandsoon,andwewouldgorighttodigitalproduction.andweactuallydidthatanditgaveusacompetitiveadvantageforawhile.

butwefoundourselveslagginginthemid90sinthecreatureandcharacterdesignstuffthatwehadactuallyfoundedthecompanytodo.so,iwrotethispiececalledavatar,whichwasmeanttoabsolutelypushtheenvelopeofvisualeffects,ofcgeffects,beyond,withrealistichumanemotivecharactersgeneratedincg,andthemaincharacterswouldallbeincg,andtheworldwouldbeincg.andtheenvelopepushedback,andiwastoldbythefolksatmycompanythatwewerentgoingtobeabletodothisforawhile.

so,ishelvedit,andimadethisothermovieaboutabigshipthatsinks.(laughter)youknow,iwentandpitchedittothestudioasromeoandjulietonaship:

itsgoingtobethisepicromance,passionatefilm.secretly,whatiwantedtodowasiwantedtodivetotherealwreckoftitanic.andthatswhyimadethemovie.(applause)andthatsthetruth.now,thestudiodidntknowthat.buticonvincedthem.isaid,weregoingtodivetothewreck.weregoingtofilmitforreal.wellbeusingitintheopeningofthefilm.itwillbereallyimportant.itwillbeagreatmarketinghook.anditalkedthemintofundinganexpedition.(laughter)

soundscrazy.butthisgoesbacktothatthemeaboutyourimaginationcreatingareality.becauseweactuallycreatedarealitywheresixmonthslater,ifindmyselfinarussiansubmersibletwoandahalfmilesdowninthenorthatlantic,lookingattherealtitanicthroughaviewport.notamovie,nothd--forreal.(applause)

now,thatblewmymind.andittookalotofpreparation,wehadtobuildcamerasandlightsandallkindsofthings.but,itstruckmehowmuchthisdive,thesedeepdives,waslikeaspacemission.youknow,whereitwashighlytechnical,anditrequiredenormousplanning.yougetinthiscapsule,yougodowntothisdarkhostileenvironmentwherethereisnohopeofrescueifyoucantgetbackbyyourself.andithoughtlike,wow.imlike,livinginasciencefictionmovie.thisisreallycool.

andso,ireallygotbittenbythebugofdeep-oceanexploration.ofcourse,thecuriosity,thesciencecomponentofit--itwaseverything.itwasadventure,itwascuriosity,itwasimagination.anditwasanexperiencethathollywoodcouldntgiveme.because,youknow,icouldimagineacreatureandwecouldcreateavisualeffectforit.buticouldntimaginewhatiwasseeingoutthatwindow.aswedidsomeofoursubsequentexpeditions,iwasseeingcreaturesathydrothermalventsandsometimesthingsthatihadneverseenbefore,sometimesthingsthatnoonehadseenbefore,thatactuallywerenotdescribedbyscienceatthetimethatwesawthemandimagedthem.

so,iwascompletelysmittenbythis,andhadtodomore.andso,iactuallymadeakindofcuriousdecision.afterthesuccessoftitanic,isaid,ok,imgoingtoparkmydayjobasahollywoodmoviemaker,andimgoingtogobeafull-timeexplorerforawhile.andso,westartedplanningtheseexpeditions.andwewoundupgoingtothebismark,andexploringitwithroboticvehicles.wewentbacktothetitanicwreck.wetooklittlebotsthatwehadcreatedthatspooledafiberoptic.andtheideawastogoinanddoaninteriorsurveyofthatship,whichhadneverbeendone.nobodyhadeverlookedinsidethewreck.theydidnthavethemeanstodoit,sowecreatedtechnologytodoit.

so,youknow,hereiamnow,onthedeckoftitanic,sittinginasubmersible,andlookingoutatplanksthatlookmuchlikethis,whereiknewthatthebandhadplayed.andimflyingalittleroboticvehiclethroughthecorridoroftheship.whenisay,imoperatingit,butmymindisinthevehicle.ifeltlikeiwasphysicallypresentinsidetheshipwreckoftitanic.anditwasthemostsurrealkindofdejavuexperienceiveeverhad,becauseiwouldknowbeforeiturnedacornerwhatwasgoingtobetherebeforethelightsofthevehicleactuallyrevealedit,becauseihadwalkedthesetformonthswhenweweremakingthemovie.andthesetwasbasedasanexactreplicaontheblueprintsoftheship.

so,itwasthisabsolutelyremarkableexperience.anditreallymademerealizethatthetelepresenceexperience--thatyouactuallycanhavetheseroboticavatars,thenyourconsciousnessisinjecte
