igrewuponasteadydietofsciencefiction.inhighschool,itookabustoschoolanhoureachwayeveryday.andiwasalwaysabsorbedinabook,sciencefictionbook,whichtookmymindtootherworlds,andsatisfied,inanarrativeform,thisinsatiablesenseofcuriositythatihad.

andyouknow,thatcuriosityalsomanifesteditselfinthefactthatwheneveriwasn'tinschooliwasoutinthewoods,hikingandtaking"samples"--frogsandsnakesandbugsandpondwater--andbringingitback,lookingatitunderthemicroscope.youknow,iwasarealsciencegeek.butitwasallabouttryingtounderstandtheworld,understandthelimitsofpossibility.

andmyloveofsciencefictionactuallyseemedmirroredintheworldaroundme,becausewhatwashappening,thiswasinthelate'60s,weweregoingtothemoon,wewereexploringthedeepoceans.jacquescousteauwascomingintoourlivingroomswithhisamazingspecialsthatshowedusanimalsandplacesandawondrousworldthatwecouldneverreallyhavepreviouslyimagined.so,thatseemedtoresonatewiththewholesciencefictionpartofit.

andiwasanartist.icoulddraw.icouldpaint.andifoundthatbecausethereweren'tvideogamesandthissaturationofcgmoviesandallofthisimageryinthemedialandscape,ihadtocreatetheseimagesinmyhead.youknow,wealldid,askidshavingtoreadabook,andthroughtheauthor'sdescription,putsomethingonthemoviescreeninourheads.andso,myresponsetothiswastopaint,todrawaliencreatures,alienworlds,robots,spaceships,allthatstuff.iwasendlesslygettingbustedinmathclassdoodlingbehindthetextbook.thatwas--thecreativityhadtofinditsoutletsomehow.

andaninterestingthinghappened:

thejacquescousteaushowsactuallygotmeveryexcitedaboutthefactthattherewasanalienworldrighthereonearth.imightnotreallygotoanalienworldonaspaceshipsomeday--thatseemedprettydarnunlikely.butthatwasaworldicouldreallygoto,righthereonearth,thatwasasrichandexoticasanythingthatihadimaginedfromreadingthesebooks.

so,idecidediwasgoingtobecomeascubadiverattheageof

15.andtheonlyproblemwiththatwasthatilivedinalittlevillageincanada,600milesfromthenearestocean.butididn'tletthatdauntme.ipesteredmyfatheruntilhefinallyfoundascubaclassinbuffalo,newyork,rightacrosstheborderfromwherewelive.andiactuallygotcertifiedinapoolataymcainthedeadofwinterinbuffalo,newyork.andididn'tseetheocean,arealocean,foranothertwoyears,untilwemovedtocalifornia.

sincethen,intheintervening40years,i'vespentabout3,000hoursunderwater,and500hoursofthatwasinsubmersibles.andi'velearnedthatthatdeep-oceanenvironment,andeventheshallowoceans,aresorichwithamazinglifethatreallyisbeyondourimagination.nature'simaginationissoboundlesscomparedtoourownmeagerhumanimagination.istill,tothisday,standinabsoluteaweofwhatiseewhenimakethesedives.andmyloveaffairwiththeoceanisongoing,andjustasstrongasiteverwas.

butwhenichoseacareerasanadult,itwasfilmmaking.andthatseemedtobethebestwaytoreconcilethisurgeihadtotellstorieswithmyurgestocreateimages.andiwas,asakid,constantlydrawingcomicbooks,andsoon.so,filmmakingwasthewaytoputpicturesandstoriestogether,andthatmadesense.andofcoursethestoriesthatichosetotellweresciencefictionstories:

"terminator,""aliens"and"theabyss."andwith"theabyss,"iwasputtingtogethermyloveofunderwateranddivingwithfilmmaking.so,youknow,mergingthetwopassions.

somethinginterestingcameoutof"theabyss,"whichwasthattosolveaspecificnarrativeproblemonthatfilm,whichwastocreatethiskindofliquidwatercreature,weactuallyembracedcomputergeneratedanimation,cg.andthisresultedinthefirstsoft-surfacecharacter,cganimationthatwaseverinamovie.andeventhoughthefilmdidn'tmakeanymoney--barelybrokeeven,ishouldsay--iwitnessedsomethingamazing,whichisthattheaudience,theglobalaudience,wasmesmerizedbythisapparentmagic.

youknow,it'sarthurclarke'slawthatanysufficientlyadvancedtechnologyisindistinguishablefrommagic.theywereseeingsomethingmagical.andsothatgotmeveryexcited.andithought,"wow,thisissomethingthatneedstobeembracedintothecinematicart."so,with"terminator2,"whichwasmynextfilm,wetookthatmuchfarther.workingwithilm,wecreatedtheliquidmetaldudeinthatfilm.thesuccesshunginthebalanceonwhetherthateffectwouldwork.anditdid,andwecreatedmagicagain,andwehadthesameresultwithanaudience--althoughwedidmakealittlemoremoneyonthatone.

so,drawingalinethroughthosetwodotsofexperiencecameto,"thisisgoingtobeawholenewworld,"thiswasawholenewworldofcreativityforfilmartists.so,istartedacompanywithstanwinston,mygoodfriendstanwinston,whoisthepremiermake-upandcreaturedesigneratthattime,anditwascalleddigitaldomain.andtheconceptofthecompanywasthatwewouldleapfrogpasttheanalogprocessesofopticalprintersandsoon,andwewouldgorighttodigitalproduction.andweactuallydidthatanditgaveusacompetitiveadvantageforawhile.

butwefoundourselveslagginginthemid'90sinthecreatureandcharacterdesignstuffthatwehadactuallyfoundedthecompanytodo.so,iwrotethispiececalled"avatar,"whichwasmeanttoabsolutelypushtheenvelopeofvisualeffects,ofcgeffects,beyond,withrealistichumanemotivecharactersgeneratedincg,andthemaincharacterswouldallbeincg,andtheworldwouldbeincg.andtheenvelopepushedback,andiwastoldbythefolksatmycompanythatweweren'tgoingtobeabletodothisforawhile.

so,ishelvedit,andimadethisothermovieaboutabigshipthatsinks.(laughter)youknow,iwentandpitchedittothestudioas"'romeoandjuliet'onaship:

"it'sgoingtobethisepicromance,passionatefilm."secretly,whatiwantedtodowasiwantedtodivetotherealwreckof"titanic."andthat'swhyimadethemovie.(applause)andthat'sthetruth.now,thestudiodidn'tknowthat.buticonvincedthem.isaid,"we'regoingtodivetothewreck.we'regoingtofilmitforreal.we'llbeusingitintheopeningofthefilm.itwillbereallyimportant.itwillbeagreatmarketinghook."anditalkedthemintofundinganexpedition.(laughter)

soundscrazy.butthisgoesbacktothatthemeaboutyourimaginationcreatingareality.becauseweactuallycreatedarealitywheresixmonthslater,ifindmyselfinarussiansubmersibletwoandahalfmilesdowninthenorthatlantic,lookingattherealtitanicthroughaviewport.notamovie,nothd--forreal.(applause)

now,thatblewmymind.andittookalotofpreparation,wehadtobuildcamerasandlightsandallkindsofthings.but,itstruckmehowmuchthisdive,thesedeepdives,waslikeaspacemission.youknow,whereitwashighlytechnical,anditrequiredenormousplanning.yougetinthiscapsule,yougodowntothisdarkhostileenvironmentwherethereisnohopeofrescueifyoucan'tgetbackbyyourself.andithoughtlike,"wow.i'mlike,livinginasciencefictionmovie.thisisreallycool."

andso,ireallygotbittenbythebugofdeep-oceanexploration.ofcourse,thecuriosity,thesciencecomponentofit--itwaseverything.itwasadventure,itwascuriosity,itwasimagination.anditwasanexperiencethathollywoodcouldn'tgiveme.because,youknow,icouldimagineacreatureandwecouldcreateavisualeffectforit.buticouldn'timaginewhatiwasseeingoutthatwindow.aswedidsomeofoursubsequentexpeditions,iwasseeingcreaturesathydrothermalventsandsometimesthingsthatihadneverseenbefore,sometimesthingsthatnoonehadseenbefore,thatactuallywerenotdescribedbyscienceatthetimethatwesawthemandimagedthem.

so,iwascompletelysmittenbythis,andhadtodomore.andso,iactuallymadeakindofcuriousdecision.afterthesuccessof"titanic,"isaid,"ok,i'mgoingtoparkmydayjobasahollywoodmoviemaker,andi'mgoingtogobeafull-timeexplorerforawhile."andso,westartedplanningtheseexpeditions.andwewoundupgoingtothebismark,andexploringitwithroboticvehicles.wewentbacktothetitanicwreck.wetooklittlebotsthatwehadcreatedthatspooledafiberoptic.andtheideawastogoinanddoaninteriorsurveyofthatship,whichhadneverbeendone.nobodyhadeverlookedinsidethewreck.theydidn'thavethemeanstodoit,sowecreatedtechnologytodoit.

so,youknow,hereiamnow,onthedeckoftitanic,sittinginasubmersible,andlookingoutatplanksthatlookmuchlikethis,whereiknewthatthebandhadplayed.andi'mflyingalittleroboticvehiclethroughthecorridoroftheship.whenisay,"i'moperatingit,"butmymindisinthevehicle.ifeltlikeiwasphysicallypresentinsidetheshipwreckoftitanic.anditwasthemostsurrealkindofdejavuexperiencei'veeverhad,becauseiwouldknowbeforeiturnedacornerwhatwasgoingtobetherebeforethelightsofthevehicleactuallyrevealedit,becauseihadwalkedthesetformonthswhenweweremakingthemovie.andthesetwasbasedasanexactreplicaontheblueprintsoftheship.

so,itwasthisabsolutelyremarkableexperience.anditreallymademere
