7.Whatarethefunctionsofsupra-segmentalfeatures?
Thephoneticfeatures,distinctiveornon-distinctive,thatwehavediscussedsofarmaybepropertiesofsinglesegments.Inthissectionwewilllookatfeaturesthatarefoundoverasegmentorsequeneeoftwoormoresegments,whicharecalledsuprasegmentalfeatures.

thevariationofpitchatthewordleveltodistinguishwords.Thesamesequeneeof
segmentscanbedifferentwordsifutteredwithdifferenttones.Englishisnotatone
Ianguage.ChineseisatypicaltoneIanguage.
Intonationandstressgenerallyoccursimultaneouslyinutteranee.Whenintonationcontourfallsonasyllable,thenucleusisstressedandthevowelisnaturallylengthenedabit.Inthemeantime,thereisalittlepauseafterthesyllable.Thissimultaneousfunctioningofthefeaturesservestohighlighttheinformationfocus,ortoeliminateambiguity(double
interpretationsofthesamephraseorsentence).

TheanswerisNo.Theobviousfactthatmanincludesfatherisderivedfromtheperspectiveofreferenee.Componentialanalysisexaminesthecomponentsofsense.Themoresemanticfeaturesawordhas,thenarroweritsrefereneeitis.
Thelimitationsofcomponentialanalysisarealsoapparent.Itcannotbeappliedtotheanalysisofalllexicon,merelytowordswithinthesamesemanticfield.ItiscontroversialwhethersemanticfeaturesareuniversalprimesofwordmeaningsinallIanguage.
Nevertheless,CAissofaramostinfluentialapproachinthestructuralanalysisoflexicalmeaning.
11.Whyislinguisticsavastfieldofstudy?
