visitedtheneighbors,offeringtocleanhousesforthemforaquatercents.Reasonableasourofferwas,therewerenotakers.ButoneneighbortelephonedmymothertoletherknowwhatMaryAliceandSallyKayweredoing.
Motherhadjusthungupthephonewhenwecamefirstintothebackdoorintothekitchenofourapartement.“Girls,”motherasked,“whywereyoutwogoingaroundtheneighborhoodtellingpeopleyouwouldcleantheirhouses?
”Motherwasn’tangrywithus.Infact,welearnedafterwardsshewasamusedthatwehadcameupwithsuchanidea.
But,forsomereason,webothdeniedhavingdoneanysuchthing.Shockedandterriblyhurtthatherdearlittlegirlscouldbesuch“boldfaced（厚颜无耻的）liars”.MotherthentoldusthatMrs.Joneshadjustcalledandtoldherwehadbeentoherhouseandsaidwewouldcleanitforaquatercents.
Facedwiththetruth,weadmittedwhatwehaddone.Mothersaidwehavefibed,wehavenottoldthetruth.Shewassurethatweknewbetter.Shetriedtoexplainwhyafib（小谎）hurt,butshedidn’tfeelthatwereallyunderstood.
