SinceMintellastreportedontheleisuresectorinAugust2003,theUKleisureindustryhassustainedimpressivelevelsofgrowth.Britonshaveincreasinglevelsofdisposableincometospendondiscretionaryitemsandborrowingsincreaseasinterestratesremainstable.AstheUKincreasinglybecomesacash-richsociety,leisureproductsofferedas‘experiencepackages’areattractingmoreinterest.Moreshortbreaksarenowbeingtakenathomeandabroadinadditiontoannuallongholidays,andmorevisitorsarecomingintotheUKcontributingsignificantlytoleisureexpenditurefigures.

Theindustryfacesvariousthreatsandchallengeshowever,asitcontinuestoexpand.Theseincluderisingcostsassociatedwithachangingregulatoryframeworkandstaffrecruitment/training,increasingcompetitionfortheleisurepoundandcompetitionfromin-homeleisureactivities.Thenumberofadmissionsatnightclubsfellby1%between1999and2004,whiletenpinbowlinghasbeenonanincreaseduringthesametimeperiodbutisnowalsoshowingaslowdowningrowth.

Thevalueoftheout-of-homeUKleisureindustryhassteadilyincreasedoverthepastfewyearsandsignsareencouragingforfuturegrowth.Theindustryhasbenefitedfromabenigneconomicclimate,favourabledemographics,growthofshortbreaksandtourism,anincreasedinterestinhealth,relaxationandwellbeing,animprovedproductoffer(fundedbybothpublicandprivatesector)andmoretargetedmarketing.

Theleisureindustryisexperiencingcontinuedgrowth

SinceMintellastreportedontheleisuresectorinAugust2003,theUKleisureindustryhassustainedimpressivelevelsofgrowth.Britonshaveincreasinglevelsofdisposableincometospendondiscretionaryitemsandborrowingsincreaseasinterestratesremainstable.Theproportionofyoungerandmoreaffluentoldermembersofthepopulationhasincreased,whilethefamilymarkethasdeclinedgradually.Moreshortbreaksarenowbeingtakenathomeandabroadinadditiontoannuallongholidays,andmorevisitorsarecomingintotheUKcontributingsignificantlytoleisureexpenditurefigures.

TheUKisincreasinglyacash-richsocietyandleisureproductsofferedas‘experiencepackages’areattractingmoreinterest.Thelong-termvalueofmaintaininghealthandwellbeingisincreasinglyapparentinanageingpopulation.ChangesinownershippatternsofmanyleisureventureshavesecuredadditionalfundingfromprivateequityinvestorswhilepublicsectorfundingintheformoftheNationalLotteryschemeshasalsogreatlycontributedtothedevelopmentandrefurbishmentoffacilities.

Cinema

Thissectorisbuoyantwithadmissionsrisingby2.4%to171millionin2004,andboxofficetakingsupby5%onthepreviousyear.Increasedinvestmentisexpectedoverthenextfewyearsasmarketleadersseektodifferentiatethroughstrongerbrandidentities.Themarketisdominatedbyfivebrands–Odeon,UGC,Vue,CineUKandUCI,howeverconsolidationisexpectedtoreducethisnumbertotwoorthreemajoroperators.

Pubsandbars

Followingthebreakupofthenationalbreweries,morepubsarerunasfreehousesoraspartofnon-brewingpubcompanies.Asaresult,thenumberofpubshasdeclinedoverthelastfewyearsbutrevenuecontinuestoincrease(estimatedat£23.4billionin2004).Foodsalesareaccountingforahigherproportionofrevenue.ThesectorfacesnewchallengesduetoaraftofrecentlegislationincludingtheLicensingAct,theAlcoholHarmReductionStrategy,theDisabilityDiscriminationActandapossiblesmokingbantobeintroduced.

Nightclubs

Althoughthesectorwasestimatedtobeworth£1,798millionin2004,inrealtermsthisrepresentsareductionbyalmostathirdsince1999.Thenightclubsectorhasstruggledrecentlyduetoincreasedcompetitionfromotherleisuresectors,suchaslate-nightbars,andwillfacethesamelegislativechallengesasthepubsectoroverthenextcoupleofyears.

Healthandfitness

Thehealthandfitnessclubsectorcontinuestogrow,achievingincreasinglevelsofspend(worth£1.8billionin2004)andhigherratesofmembership.However,futuregrowthisnotexpectedtobeasrapidasthatexperiencedsincethelate1990sduetofewernewsitesbeingopened.Nevertheless,furthergrowthisexpectedbothinpublicandprivatesectorfacilities.Operatorsareexpectedtoconvertmoreofthosewhocurrentlyparticipateinsportintoclubmembers.Furtherconsolidationisexpectedtotakeplacewithinthissector,leavingfourorfivemainplayer
