INTRODUCTION
ThedustandanytypeofdirtydepositingonthePrimaryMirrorsurface,arecauseofdangerouslossofefficiencyoftheTelescope,somuchtosuggest,alsoifwithaincreaseofcostandcomplication,toincludeinthedesignaneffectivecoverprotectionfortheM1.
Thepresentspecificationconcernsthetwocoversfortheprimarymirrorsofthetelescope,onefortherightsideandtheotherfortheleftone.Eachofthemhasamainrotatingarmtogetitinpositionandadeployableumbrella(cover)drivenbydifferentcontrol.Ascanbeunderstoodfromtheencloseddrawings,eachunitisdescribedastwoseparatecomponents.Infact,therotatingarmwithitsdrivesystempresentsconstructionproblemsquitedifferentfromtheretractablefabriccoverwithitsguidinganddrivingsystem.ThecontractfortheentiresupplywillbegiventoasingleCompany.
Theprincipleandtheconstructiontechnologyofthefabricretractablecoverhasbeenprovedandpositivelytestedduring1995bytheArcetriObservatoryona2mdiameterscaledprototype.
Thedimensionsreportedintherelateddrawingsmustbestrictlyrespectedbecauseoftheinterfacingtelescopestructuresandtheopticalobstructions.Ontheotherhand,theconstructiondetailsforthecoveranditsguidingsystemaresubjecttoalternativeproposalsaccordingtotheexperienceandsuggestionscomingfromtheManufacturers.
1SUPPLYDESCRIPTION.
1.1RotatingArmwithDrivingsystem
ThisfirstsubassemblyoftheM1CoverconsistsinafixedcylindricalmasttobeboltedontheELstructure,supportingboththebearingandthescrewjackforthe90degreerotationoftheswingarm-seedwg.727a009and727a008.
Althoughonthedwg727a011alsothedrivingunitandthechainforopeningandclosingthecoverarerepresented,weincludeinthemechanicalsupplydescriptiononlythemachinedcircularsectorsupportingtheclosedbellow,whileallthedetailsdescribedintheintroductionareincludedinthecoveritem.
Thetwoarmshingedinthecenterhavingthefunctionofmobileanchoringofthebellowsandsupportofthedrivingunitforopeningandclosingit,arepartoftheretractablecoveritemaswell.
AnimportantinterfaceisontheELmainstructure,consistinginthesupplyofatemplatecompleteoftheboringsforthefixationofthecylindricalcolumnrepresentedonthedwg.727a013.
1.2RetractableFabricCover
TocompletetheM1Coverunit-seetheassemblydwg.727a007-hastobeaddedwhatwehavecalled“fabriccover”,suchitemincludesalargeseriesofmechanicaldetails,startingfromthechaintobefixedaroundtheexternalcellwallandthetwodrivingunitswiththerelevantsupportingarmhingedatthecenterpin.
Thecoveritselfisforeseenbeingmadeofaseriesofstainlesssteelthinbladesconnectedeachotherwithhingesallalongtheirlength.Thefirstandthelastbladeareconnectedtothefixedanddrivingstructures;particularattentionmustbedevotedtothedetailsofsupportingandguidingthecoverbladesaroundtheM1cellupperflange,tothebladesthemselvessupportingthehorizontalandfrontfabricconnections.Asfarasthesupportsandconnectionsaroundthecenterpinareconcerned,asufficientnumberofhingesconnecttoabushrotatingaroundthecenterpinitself.SuchdesignreportedintheencloseddrawingscanberevisedalsoaccordingtotheManufacturerexperience,consideringthatwehaverepresentedtheresultsofthefirst2mdiametertestbenchimplementation.
1.3Supplyingconsistence
Moreindetail,thesupplyconsistspurchasingallthecommercialcomponentsbeingpartoftherotationmechanisms,themotorsandthelimitswitches;alsothefinalcablingandtheelectricalcontrolunitsarepartofthesupply.Thenecessaryequipmentfortheacceptancetestsshallbeprovidedbythesuppliertoo.
EveryrotatingM1Covershallbefullypreassembledincludingtherotationmechanismsandlocatedfortheacceptancefunctionaltestsinhorizontalposition(telescopezenithpointing)andatdifferentelevationanglestowardtheverticalposition.
