Andtogether,you’llbehelping4studentslearnwherefoodcomesfrom,anddevelophealthyhabits. You’llbeelevating(提起,升高)theroleoffoodinourschools,andworkingtocreatehealthymealsonabudget.
Now,justlikeyouwouldn’tbethrilledifsomeonecameinyourrestaurantandtoldyouwhattodo,we’renotaskingyouguystogointoschoolkitchensandtakeover. Andthat'sanimportantpointtomake.
Ourschoolfoodserviceprofessionalswhoareoutthere,theyhavededicated5theircareerstohelpingourchildrengrowuphealthyandhappy. Theyworklonghoursandtheystretchbudgetstothelimit,oftenwithnorecognitionatall. They’relookingforwardtogettingsomeextrahelp--theyneedit--doingeverythingfromteachingbasiccookingskillsinthecafeteria(自助餐厅)toencouraginghealthychoicesinthelunchline. Sothey'regoingtoneedyoursupport,butit’sgottobeacollaboration8. Andwestronglyencourageyoualltogoinwiththatspirit.
NowIknowthatnoneofthisisgoingtobeeasy. Nothingwedois. IthinktheverynatureoflivinginthishousemeansthattheEasyButtonhasbeentakenawayforever. (Laughter.) Anditwon’thappenovernight. That'sforsure. Soit’sgoing--there’sgoingtobealearningcurve. Soyou’vegottobepatientandhelppeoplebecomepatientwithyou.
Butmakingourschoolshealthierisn’tjustaboutwhathappensinthekitchen. AsNorahsaid,it’salsoaboutwhatkidslearnintheclassroom. Andthat’swhywe’realsoencouragingyoutodothingslikeputoncookingdemonstrations9;teachkidshowtopreparemealsathome. Youcanhelpstartacookingclub,workwiththeteachertointegrate(整合)foodintothelessonplan,likethey’vedoneatMurch,orhelpstudentsplantagarden,ifpossible. Allthatstuffisapartofit. It’snotjustabouttheworkinthekitchen.
Andwithyourhelp,ourhopeisthatwe’llbeabletodoublethenumberofschoolsintheHealthierUSSchoolChallenge. Thisisaninnovative10programthatrecognizesschoolsthatareprovidinghealthyfoodsandopportunitiesforkidstostayactive. Sotherearejustsomanywaystogetinvolved. AndIknowthatmanyofyouarealreadyaheadofthegamebecauseyou’redoingthatrightnow. You’reherebecauseyou’realreadydoingit.
TherearefolkslikeChefToniRobertson,who,forthelastthreeyears,hashelpedstudentsfromtheMottHallSchoolinNewYorkplantavegetablegardenandlearnhealthyeatinghabits-–eventhrowingsaladpartiesforparents. That'sagoodthing.
There’salsoChefSethBixbyDaughertyfromMinnesotawhohasworkedwith--yes,let’sgivehimahand--(applause)--whohasworkedwithseveralschoolsacrossthecountrytodesigneasy,healthyrecipes(食谱,处方)thattastegoodandcanbemadewiththeequipmentthatschoolsalreadyhave.
Orthere’ssomeonelikeFernandoOleafromSantaFe,whoteachespopularcookingclassesforlocalstudents--yay,Fernando--(applause)--showingthemhowtopreparehealthymealsfromhisnativeMexico.
Intheend,it’sallabouthelpingkidsbuildhealthyhabitsthataregoingtolastalifetime.
AndmanyofyouguysknowabouttheWhiteHouseKitchenGarden. We’regoingtogodownthereandharvestwithourkidsinafewminutes. ButIstillrememberlastyearwhenwestartedthewholeprocess,andweinvolvedkidsfromlocalschoolsfromtheverybeginning. Theyhelpedustillthesoil. Theyhelpedusplant. Theyhelpedusweed. Theyhelpedusharvest.
