Butyouguyscanhelpchangethat. That'swhywecreatedthe“ChefsMovetoSchools”program,topairchefslikeyouwithinterestedschoolsinyourlocalcommunities. Andtogether,you’llbehelping4studentslearnwherefoodcomesfrom,anddevelophealthyhabits. You’llbeelevating（提起，升高）theroleoffoodinourschools,andworkingtocreatehealthymealsonabudget.

Now,justlikeyouwouldn’tbethrilledifsomeonecameinyourrestaurantandtoldyouwhattodo,we’renotaskingyouguystogointoschoolkitchensandtakeover. Andthat'sanimportantpointtomake.

Ourschoolfoodserviceprofessionalswhoareoutthere,theyhavededicated5theircareerstohelpingourchildrengrowuphealthyandhappy. Theyworklonghoursandtheystretchbudgetstothelimit,oftenwithnorecognitionatall. Andtheiradvicehasbeensoinvaluable6（无价的）aswe’vetriedtoidentifyareaswhereschoolscanimproveandbecomemoreefficient. Sotheydeserveourrespectandouradmiration7,andIwanttotakethetimenowtothankthemfortheirserviceandfortheir--（applause）--fortheirhardwork.

That’swhywe’reaskingyou,whenyougointotheschools,toworkcloselywithourfoodserviceprofessionalstosupporttheworkthattheydoeveryday,inandout,longhours. They’relookingforwardtogettingsomeextrahelp--theyneedit--doingeverythingfromteachingbasiccookingskillsinthecafeteria（自助餐厅）toencouraginghealthychoicesinthelunchline. Sothey'regoingtoneedyoursupport,butit’sgottobeacollaboration8. Andwestronglyencourageyoualltogoinwiththatspirit.

NowIknowthatnoneofthisisgoingtobeeasy. Nothingwedois. IthinktheverynatureoflivinginthishousemeansthattheEasyButtonhasbeentakenawayforever. （Laughter.） Anditwon’thappenovernight. That'sforsure. You’regoingtoneedtofigureoutwhatyou’reupagainst. You’regoingtoneedtotaketimetolearnyourcommunities,tounderstandyourschools,tofigureouthowtheschoolkitchenoperates,tofindingoutwhatequipmentisavailable--becausethereareequipmentlimitationsthathavebeenanissueatsomemanyschools--andwhatkindofchangestheschoolandthecommunitycanactuallysustain（承担，维持）. Soit’sgoing--there’sgoingtobealearningcurve. Soyou’vegottobepatientandhelppeoplebecomepatientwithyou.

Butmakingourschoolshealthierisn’tjustaboutwhathappensinthekitchen. AsNorahsaid,it’salsoaboutwhatkidslearnintheclassroom. Andthat’swhywe’realsoencouragingyoutodothingslikeputoncookingdemonstrations9;teachkidshowtopreparemealsathome. Youcanhelpstartacookingclub,workwiththeteachertointegrate（整合）foodintothelessonplan,likethey’vedoneatMurch,orhelpstudentsplantagarden,ifpossible. Allthatstuffisapartofit. It’snotjustabouttheworkinthekitchen.

Andwithyourhelp,ourhopeisthatwe’llbeabletodoublethenumberofschoolsintheHealthierUSSchoolChallenge. Thisisaninnovative10programthatrecognizesschoolsthatareprovidinghealthyfoodsandopportunitiesforkidstostayactive. Sotherearejustsomanywaystogetinvolved. AndIknowthatmanyofyouarealreadyaheadofthegamebecauseyou’redoingthatrightnow. You’reherebecauseyou’realreadydoingit.

TherearefolkslikeChefToniRobertson,who,forthelastthreeyears,hashelpedstudentsfromtheMottHallSchoolinNewYorkplantavegetablegardenandlearnhealthyeatinghabits-–eventhrowingsaladpartiesforparents. That'sagoodthing.

There’salsoChefSethBixbyDaughertyfromMinnesotawhohasworkedwith--yes,let’sgivehimahand--（applause）--whohasworkedwithseveralschoolsacrossthecountrytodesigneasy,healthyrecipes（食谱，处方）thattastegoodandcanbemadewiththeequipmentthatschoolsalreadyhave.

Orthere’ssomeonelikeFernandoOleafromSantaFe,whoteachespopularcookingclassesforlocalstudents--yay,Fernando--（applause）--showingthemhowtopreparehealthymealsfromhisnativeMexico.

Intheend,it’sallabouthelpingkidsbuildhealthyhabitsthataregoingtolastalifetime.

AndmanyofyouguysknowabouttheWhiteHouseKitchenGarden. We’regoingtogodownthereandharvestwithourkidsinafewminutes. ButIstillrememberlastyearwhenwestartedthewholeprocess,andweinvolvedkidsfromlocalschoolsfromtheverybeginning. Theyhelpedustillthesoil. Theyhelpedusplant. Theyhelpedusweed. Theyhelpedusharvest. Theyate. Itwasprettypowerful.

Andseveraloftheschoolsaskedthekidstoreflectinwritingontheirexperience. Andthisiswhathelpedustoknowthatwewereontosomethinghere. Oneofthestudentsdescribedherselfas“aprettyregularfifth-graderwholovessweets.” Andafterwards,shewrotethathertimeinthegarden--andthisisaquote--“hasmademethinkaboutthechoicesIhavewithwhatIputinmymouth.”  Hey--winner!
