Youcanmakeasaladbarfun--now,that’ssomething--anddelicious. Youcanteachkidstocooksomethingthattastesgoodandisgoodforthem;andshareyourpassionforfoodinawaythat’strulycontagious1(蔓延的,感染性的).

Letmetellyousomething. Mymotherdidn’tknowhowtocookbroccoli2(花椰菜,西兰花). Itwaswatery3andmushy(糊状的),andthat'swhatwethoughtbroccoliwas. Wethoughtyoucouldeatitwithaspoonandcutitwithaknife. (Laughter.) AndIknowalotofparentsouttherecookingbroccolilikethat. Itmakesithardtolikebroccoliifthat’showyou’recookingit.

Butyouguyscanhelpchangethat. That'swhywecreatedthe“ChefsMovetoSchools”program,topairchefslikeyouwithinterestedschoolsinyourlocalcommunities. Andtogether,you’llbehelping4studentslearnwherefoodcomesfrom,anddevelophealthyhabits. You’llbeelevating(提起,升高)theroleoffoodinourschools,andworkingtocreatehealthymealsonabudget.

Now,justlikeyouwouldn’tbethrilledifsomeonecameinyourrestaurantandtoldyouwhattodo,we’renotaskingyouguystogointoschoolkitchensandtakeover. Andthat'sanimportantpointtomake.

Ourschoolfoodserviceprofessionalswhoareoutthere,theyhavededicated5theircareerstohelpingourchildrengrowuphealthyandhappy. Theyworklonghoursandtheystretchbudgetstothelimit,oftenwithnorecognitionatall. Andtheiradvicehasbeensoinvaluable6(无价的)aswe’vetriedtoidentifyareaswhereschoolscanimproveandbecomemoreefficient. Sotheydeserveourrespectandouradmiration7,andIwanttotakethetimenowtothankthemfortheirserviceandfortheir--(applause)--fortheirhardwork.

That’swhywe’reaskingyou,whenyougointotheschools,toworkcloselywithourfoodserviceprofessionalstosupporttheworkthattheydoeveryday,inandout,longhours. They’relookingforwardtogettingsomeextrahelp--theyneedit--doingeverythingfromteachingbasiccookingskillsinthecafeteria(自助餐厅)toencouraginghealthychoicesinthelunchline. Sothey'regoingtoneedyoursupport,butit’sgottobeacollaboration8. Andwestronglyencourageyoualltogoinwiththatspirit.

NowIknowthatnoneofthisisgoingtobeeasy. Nothingwedois. IthinktheverynatureoflivinginthishousemeansthattheEasyButtonhasbeentakenawayforever. (Laughter.) Anditwon’thappenovernight. That'sforsure. You’regoingtoneedtofigureoutwhatyou’reupagainst. You’regoingtoneedtotaketimetolearnyourcommunities,tounderstandyourschools,tofigureouthowtheschoolkitchenoperates,tofindingoutwhatequipmentisavailable--becausethereareequipmentlimitationsthathavebeenanissueatsomemanyschools--andwhatkindofchangestheschoolandthecommunitycanactuallysustain(承担,维持). Soit’sgoing--there’sgoingtobealearningcurve. Soyou’vegottobepatientandhelppeoplebecomepatientwithyou.

Butmakingourschoolshealthierisn’tjustaboutwhathappensinthekitchen. AsNorahsaid,it’salsoaboutwhatkidslearnintheclassroom. Andthat’swhywe’realsoencouragingyoutodothingslikeputoncookingdemonstrations9;teachkidshowtopreparemealsathome. Youcanhelpstartacookingclub,workwiththeteachertointegrate(整合)foodintothelessonplan,likethey’vedoneatMurch,orhelpstudentsplantagarden,ifpossible. Allthatstuffisapartofit. It’snotjustabouttheworkinthekitchen.

Andwithyourhelp,ourhopeisthatwe’llbeabletodoublethenumberofschoolsintheHealthierUSSchoolChallenge. Thisisaninnovative10programthatrecognizesschoolsthatareprovidinghealthyfoodsandopportunitiesforkidstostayactive. Sotherearejustsomanywaystogetinvolved. AndIknowthatmanyofyouarealreadyaheadofthegamebecauseyou’redoingthatrightnow. You’reherebecauseyou’realreadydoingit.

TherearefolkslikeChefToniRobertson,who,forthelastthreeyears,hashelpedstudentsfromtheMottHallSchoolinNewYorkplantavegetablegardenandlearnhealthyeatinghabits-–eventhrowingsaladpartiesforparents. That'sagoodthing.

There’salsoChefSethBixbyDaughertyfromMinnesotawhohasworkedwith--yes,let’sgivehimahand--(applause)--whohasworkedwithseveralschoolsacrossthecountrytodesigneasy,healthyrecipes(食谱,处方)thattastegoodandcanbemadewiththeequipmentthatschoolsalreadyhave.

Orthere’ssomeonelikeFernandoOleafromSantaFe,whoteachespopularcookingclassesforlocalstudents--yay,Fernando--(applause)--showingthemhowtopreparehealthymealsfromhisnativeMexico.

Intheend,it’sallabouthelpingkidsbuildhealthyhabitsthataregoingtolastalifetime.

AndmanyofyouguysknowabouttheWhiteHouseKitchenGarden. We’regoingtogodownthereandharvestwithourkidsinafewminutes. ButIstillrememberlastyearwhenwestartedthewholeprocess,andweinvolvedkidsfromlocalschoolsfromtheverybeginning. Theyhelpedustillthesoil. Theyhelpedusplant. Theyhelpedusweed. Theyhelpedusharvest. Theyate. Itwasprettypowerful.

Andseveraloftheschoolsaskedthekidstoreflectinwritingontheirexperience. Andthisiswhathelpedustoknowthatwewereontosomethinghere. Oneofthestudentsdescribedherselfas“aprettyregularfifth-graderwholovessweets.” Andafterwards,shewrotethathertimeinthegarden--andthisisaquote--“hasmademethinkaboutthechoicesIhavewithwhatIputinmymouth.”  Hey--winner!

Andoneyoungmanwrote,andthisisadirectquote,“Ithinkaboutthegardenprojectasamodelforbeinggentle:

 gentlewithnature,gentletoyourbody,andgentlewitheachother. Nowweneedtorememberandfollowthatmodel.” Isn’tthatbeautiful?

Soultimately,thisiswhatwe’retryingtodo. Andasyouknow,kidsaresohungry. Theywilltakeitallin. Theycanchangetheirhabits,theirtastebuds(味蕾),theirapproachesovernight. Alltheyneedisyourencouragement,yourenthusiasm,yourpassion,andyourpatience. Andifwedothistogether--andIknowyouguysarereadybecauseyouwouldn’tbesittingouthereinthosehatsinthehotsunifyouweren’t--(laughter)--wecanchangethefutureforourchildrenandforthisnation.

Wearesogratefultoyou,soproudoftheworkthatyou’vedone,andwe’reaskingyoutodomoretorecruitothers. Thereareaboutathousandofyouhere. Wecantriplethatnumber. Andthat’salsopartofyourgoal. Wewantyoutoreachout,findthosewhoarelesshesitant(踌躇的,迟疑的),whoarealittleafraidofkids,whoarenotsureaboutschools,andhelpbringthemin. We’vegottomakethesenumbersgrowbecausewewantyouallineveryschoolinthenation. Wewanteveryschoolinthenationtohaveachefpartner,asetofkidswhocallyoutheirs,whobelievethatyoucareaboutnothingmorethanhowtheygrowupandhowtheyfeel. Themoregrownupswhoareworkingonbehalfofourkids,thestrongerthey’llbe.
