Description
BACKGROUNDOFTHEINVENTION
Thepresentinventiongenerallyrelatestoantifoamsforuseinthepaperindustry.Morespecifically,thepresentinventionrelatestofattyalcoholantifoamswithimprovedshelflife.
Foamisamaterialmadeupofgasbubblesseparatedfromoneanotherbyfilmsofliquid.Althoughfoamsofexceptionalstabilityaredesiredinsomecommercialapplications,foamisanuisanceinmanysituations.Forinstance,intheglueandpaperindustries,foamscauseundesirablecomplications.Acommonrecourseistheadditionofchemicalantifoams,whicharesometimesinsolubleliquidsofverylowsurfacetension.Whenadropletofsuchaliquidissprayedontothefoamoriscarriedintoitbymechanicalagitation,itspreadsspontaneouslyandrapidlyatthesurfaceofthefilm,virtuallysweepingthefoamawayasitdoesso.Liquidsfrequentlyusedforthispurposeareoctylalcohol,tributylphosphate,siliconeandmanypatentedpreparations.
Antifoams,suchasfattyalcoholdefoamers,thusserveacriticalfunctioninavarietyofindustries,suchasthepaperindustry.However,adisadvantageofcommercialantifoamformulationsistheirlimitedshelf-life.Knownantifoamsoftencreamduringstorageandinsomecasesthickentosuchanextentthattheycannolongerbepumped.Thisthickeningorgelationrenderstheapplicationofthefattyalcoholactiveingredienttoafoamingsystemdifficultatbest,limitingthesaleofproductscontainingsubstantiallythefattyalcoholactiveingredient.
Moreover,anotherdisadvantageofknownantifoamsisthattheyareineffectiveatelevatedtemperatures.Antifoamemulsions,whichareconventionallyusedinpapermaking,areknowntobecomelesseffectiveifthetemperatureoftheaqueoussystemtobedefoamedincreasesabove50°C.Attemperaturesabove60°C.,anevenmorerapiddecreaseintheeffectivenessoftheantifoamoccurswhenknownoil-in-wateremulsionsareused.Sinceanincreasingtendencyforwatercirculationsinthepapermillsistobeclosedones,theresultisthatthetemperatureofthewaterconveyedinthecirculationincreasesduringpapermaking,sothattheeffectivenessoftheantifoamsusedtodatedecreasessubstantially.
Therefore,aneedexistsforafattyalcoholantifoamformulationwithimprovedshelflifeandimprovedelevatedtemperatureperformance.
SUMMARYOFTHEINVENTION
Thepresentinventionprovidesafattyalcoholdefoamerwithincreasedshelf-lifeaswellasimprovedperformanceunderelevatedtemperatureconditions.Theimprovedshelf-lifeofthepresentinventionresultsfromprovidingtheactiveingredientofanantifoamformulation,namelyawater-baseddispersionofthesubstantiallyfattyalcoholingredient,inaformthatisinsensitivetoincreasesinviscosityorage.Inthisregard,thepresentinventionprovidesformingamixedemulsionwhereinthefattyalcoholwater-baseddispersioniscontainedastheinternalordispersedphaseofanotherfluid.Whereas,theimprovedelevatedtemperatureperformanceresultsfromtheadditionofhydrophobicparticlestotheexternalorcontinuousphaseoftheemulsion.
Thepresentinventionprovidesanantifoamemulsionthatexhibitsincreasedstabilityoveralongerstorageperiodandunderavarietyofconditions.Theantifoamemulsionincludesaninternalphaseconsistingofafattyalcoholdispersion.Theemulsionalsoincludesanemulsifierandanexternalphaseincludingawaterinsolubleorpartiallymiscibleliquid.
Conventionalfattyalcoholdispersionscanbeusedfortheinternalphaseofthepresentinvention.Forexample,fattyalcoholsobtainedfromtheZeiglerprocessortheoxoprocessaresuitable.Additionally,naturallyoccurringmaterialsarealsoacceptable.
Suitablecarrierliquidsfortheexternalphaseagainareanywaterinsolubleorpartiallymiscibleliquid.Examplesofthecarrierliquidinclude:
Guerbetbranchedalcohols;octanol;decanol;oleylalcohol;mineraloil;lightpetroleumdistillates;polybutenes;siliconeoilandmixturesthereof.
Topromotetheformationandstabilizationofthemixedemulsion,anemulsifierisused.Simplemonomericemulsifiersaswellaspolymericemulsifierscanbeusedinthepresentinvention.Examplesofsuitableemulsifiersthatcanbeusedtoformtheantifoamemulsionarealkylphenolethoxylates,alcoholethoxylates,polyether-polysiloxanes,andsorbitanfattyacidesters.
Inapreferredembodiment,themixedemulsionalsoincludeshydrophobicparticles.Useofhydrophobicparticles,suchashydrophobicsilica,intheexternalphasenotonlyimpartsadegreeofmechanicalstabilitytotheemulsion,butalsoimprovestheelevatedtemperaturedefoamingperformanceoftheemulsion.
Thepresentinventionalsoprovidesamethodforimprovingtheshelf-lifeofafattyalcoholdefoamer.Thismethodincludesaninitialstepofprovidingafattyalcoholdispersion.Then,thefattyalcoholdispersionisformedintoamixedemulsionwithinacarrierliquid.Insuchemulsion,thefatty
