WhenBronyafinishedmedicalschoolin1891,23-year-o1dMaryaSklodowskawenttoParistobeginherownstudies.
OnceshearrivedinParis,
Maryachangedhernameto
theFrenchform,Marie.AfterlivingwithBronyaandherhusbandforashorttime,
shemovedtoalessexpensivesetofroomsneartheuniversity
soshecouldstudyinpeace.Mariewasverypoor,
butevenamongher
difficultlivingconditions,shewashappy.
InJuly1893,Mariepassedherphysicsexamfirstinherclass.Atthistime,shemetPierreCurie,ayoungscientist.
MarieandPierrefoundthattheyhadmuchincommon.Theybothbelievedthatsciencewasthemostimportantpartoftheirlives.
Theydidn’tcareaboutmoneyoraboutbeingcomfortable.
Theyfellinlove,andweremarriedonJuly26,1895.MarieandPierreCuriewereveryhappy.
Theydiscussedtheirworkaswellasthemostrecentscientificevents,
suchasthediscoveryofXrays.
Mariewas
interestedinthisresearch,
andbeganto
lookforunknownelementsthathadsuchrays.
PierreCuriestoppedhisownresearchinordertohelpMarieinherwork.
Herealizedthatshewasabouttomakeanimportantdiscovery.
In1898,
theCuriesdiscovered
twonewelementsthatgaveoffXrays.
Inthosedays,
nooneknewthatsuchmaterialsweredangerous.Theydidnotknowthatworkingwith
thesematerials
causedtheirillnesses,andtheykeptworking.Finally,in1902,
theyprovedthatradiumisreal.
OnJune25,1903,MadamCuriebecamethefirstwoman
toreceiveadoctorofsciencedegreefromtheSorbonne.Thenshereceivedanevengreateraward.In1903,MarieandPierreCurieandHenriBecquerelwereawardedtheNobelPrizeinphysics.
TheCuriescontinuedtoworkcloselytogetheruntilaterribleeventhappened.InApril,1906,
Pierrewaskilledinastreetaccident.Mariewasverysad,butshecontinuedworking.Then,in1910,
shemadepureradium.
ItwasMarieCurie’sbiggestsuccess.In1911,shereceivedtheNobelPrizeagain,inchemistry.ShewasthefirstwomantoreceivetheNobelPrize,andthefirstpersontoreceiveittwice.
Overtheyears,Marie’sconstantworkwithradiumcontinuedtohurtherhealth.
ShediedonJuly4,1934,fromanillnesscausedbyherlife’swork:
radium.MadamCurienevercaredaboutmakinganymoneyfromherdiscoveries.Herlifehadbeenoneofhardwork;however,inherfamilylifeshewashappilymarriedandhadtwodaughters.
