BaySouthisthelargestgardenatGardensbytheBayanditstandsat54hectareslocatednexttotheMarinaBaySands. MasterplannedbyUK-basedlandscapearchitecturefirmGrantAssociates,thislivelyandvibrantgardenshowcasesthebestoftropicalhorticultureandgardenartistrywithamassdisplayoftropicalflowersandcolouredfoliageandmore.  Keyhighlightsare:

Supertrees 

∙DesignedbyGrantAssociatesastree-likestructuresbetween25metresand50metresinheight（9to16storeys）,the18Supertreesareuniquelydesignedverticalgardens,withemphasisplacedoncreatinga“wow”factorthroughtheverticaldisplayoftropicalfloweringclimbers,epiphytesandferns.Atnight,thesecanopiescomealivewithlightingandprojectedmediaproducedbyLightingPlannersAssociates.

∙TheSupertreesareembeddedwithsustainableenergyandwatertechnologiesintegraltothecoolingoftheConservatory.

∙Giventheequatorialclimate,thegroveofSupertreeswillhelptoamelioratediscomfortbyprovidingshadeandshelterwiththecanopy.

∙TheSupertreessupportabaratthetopofthetallesttree（designedbyWilkinsonEyreArchitects）andanaerialwalkwayexperience20mabovetheground（designedbyGrantAssociates）.

CooledConservatories

∙TheConservatoryComplexisanarchitecturalicon,ahorticulturalattractionandashowcaseofsustainableenergytechnology.

∙ComprisingtwobiomesdesignedbyWilkinsonEyreArchitects–theFlowerDome（1.2hectare）andtheCloudForest（0.8hectare）–thatdisplayplantsandflowersfromtheMediterranean-typeclimaticregionsandTropicalMontane（CloudForest）environmentsrespectively,theConservatoryComplexwillprovideanall-weather“edutainment”spacewithintheGardens.

∙TheinternalgardensandlandscapesaredesignedbyGrantAssociatesincollaborationwithWilkinsonEyreArchitects.

∙ToascertaintheenvironmentallysensitiveenergyrequirementsoftheConservatory,NParkscommissionedanenergymodelingstudy.Thestudyshowsthat,byapplyingthelatestcoolingtechnologies,theenergyconsumptionfortheConservatoryiscomparabletothatofanaveragecommercialbuildinginSingaporeofthesamefootprintandheight,normalisedtoa24-hourcoolingperiod.

HorticulturalThemedGardens

∙DesignedbyGrantAssociateswithplantingbyNParks,thesegardensshowcasethebestoftropicalhorticultureandgardenartistry.Togetherwithmassfloweringandcolouredfoliagelandscape,theyformaspectacleofcolourandtextureandfragrancewithintheGardens,providingamesmerisingexperienceforvisitors.

∙Thereare2collections,namelytheHeritageGardensandTheWorldofPlants,whichcentreonthesubjects:

‘PlantsandPeople’and‘PlantsandPlanet’.

HeritageGardens:

Thisisacollectionof4gardensthatreflectsthehistoryandcultureofSingapore’smainethnicgroupsaswellasthecity-state’scolonialheritage.EachGardenexplorestherichculturalsignificanceofdifferentplantspeciesincludingtheirsymbolism,religioussignificance,trade,foodandmedicinalusesetc.

∙TheMalayGardentellsthestoryoflifeinatraditional“kampong”（village）

∙TheIndianGarden’slayoutechoesatraditionalillustratedflowermotif.

∙TheChineseGardenreflectstheroleofgardensinChinesecultureasplacesofinspirationforwriters,poetsandartists,throughseclusionandtranquility.

∙TheColonialGardentellsthestoryofplantsas“EnginesofEmpire”–lucrativecrops,spicesandplantsthatformedimportanttraderoutesbetweentheEastandtheWest.

TheWorldofPlants:

Thesecondcollectionofgardensisbasedonthetheme“PlantsandPlanet”andshowcasesthebiodiversityofplantlifeonourplanet. Thereare6gardensintotal:

∙SecretLifeofTreesexaminestrees,whattheyare,theirfunctionsandtheirevolution.Italsoinvestigatestheroleoftreesintherainforest.

∙WorldofPalmscelebratestherichdiversityoftheworldoftropicalpalmsandtheirparticularecologicalniches. Differentshapesoffrondsandseeds,aswellastheversatileuseofpalmsarealsohighlightedinthegarden.

∙Understoreyfeaturestheforestrootzone&plantspeciesoftheforestfloor. Storiesincludehowplantshaveadaptedtothespecificenvironmentssuchaslowlightlevelsandpoorsoilaswellasthecycleofdecomposition.

∙FruitsandFlowersisabouttheamazingworldofflowersandfruits.Therearestoriesabouttheformandfunctionofflowersandfruits,whyplantsneedflowersandfruitsandthedomesticationofrainforestfruits.

∙DiscoveryGardenlooksatplantevolutionthroughoutthelifespanoftheplanet,andfocusesonselectedancientgroupsofplants.Byprovidingvisitorswithaglimpseofthelongtimeittookfortheplantdiversityweseetodaytoevolve,italsodrawsacomparisonwiththeacceleratedrateofextinctioncausedbyman.

∙WebofLifefocusesontheinterrelationshipofrainforestflorawithfauna. Themainsubjectwillbetheweboflife.Thiswillincludethekeystonespeciesandfoodchainsinthetropicalrainforest.Thefocuswillbeonthefigaskeystonespecies.

OtherBaySouthGardenAttractions

Inadditiontothiscollectionofspecialgardens,thesiteincludesawiderangeofadditionalGardenattractions.Theseinclude:

∙SupertreeGroveisthelargestgardenattheheartofthesitefeaturingaclusterof12Supertrees.Thegardenislinedbya300mlongcolonnadedwalkwayprovidingshadedanddryconnectionacrossthesiteandbyadisplayofAerialRootpergolasdisplayingtropicalclimbingplants.

∙DragonflyLakeisa1kmlonglakecreatingadramaticsettingtotheSupertreesandConservatories.ThedistinctiveDragonflyBridgeconnectsthecitytothecentralgardens.Thelakeislinedbyboardwalkandspecialaquaticgardensandasystemoffilterbedsthatarepartofthewaterqualitymanagementforthesite.

∙Marinapromenadeisa1kmtreelinedwalkwayalongtheMarinaedgelinkingthecitycentrewiththeBarrage

∙TadpolePlayAreaisanaturethemedplaygroundsetwithinaplantedrainforest

∙FragileForesthasbeenplantedusingnativespeciestosimulateatypicalS.E.AsianRainforest
