Toprepareforthatday.scientistsareusingnewtechniquestoreanalyzethe1906earthquakeandpredicthowbadthedamagemightbewhenthenextonehappens.Onenewfindingaboutthe1906quakeisthattheSanAndreasFaultsplitapartfasterthanscientistshadassumedatthetime.Duringsmallearthquakes,faultsruptureatabout2.7kilometerspersecond.Duringbiggerquakes,however,rupturescanhappenatratesfasterthan3.5kilometerspersecond.

Atsuchhighspeeds,massiveamountsofpressurebuildup,generatingundergroundwavesthatcancausemoredamagethanthequakeitself.LuckyforSanFancisco,thesepressurepulses(脉冲)traveledalwayfromthecityduffngthe1906event.Asbadasthedamagewas,itcouldhavebeenfarWorse.

Lookingahead,scientistsaretryingtopredictwhenthenextmajorquakewilloccur.Recordsshowthatearthquakeswerecommonbefore1906event.Sincethen,theareahasbeenrelativelyquiet.Pattemsinthedata,however,suggestthattheprobabilityofamajorearthquakestrikingthebayareabefore2032isatleast62percent.
