BornintheCounty,AnhuiProvince,TaoXingzhi(October18,1891—July25,1946)wasoneofthegreatesteducationalists,communistsandpatriotsi

nmodernChina.Whenhewasyoung,Taolivedinapoverty-strickenareaandhadwitnessedmiserablelifeofChinesepeople,especiallythatofthepeasantswhoaccountedfor80%ofthenation’spopulation,underthesuppressionofforeigninvadersatthattime.

AftergraduatingfromNanjingUniversityasthetopstudentwiththehighestscoresinallcourses,TaosetoutfortheUStofurtherhiseducation.Atfirst,hestudiedpoliticsinUniversityofIllinoisbutsoonhefoundthatpoliticsofferednohelpforsavingthecountry,andthenchangedhismajorintoeducation.

Six-yearexperienceabroadletTaoXingzhicometorealizethesharpcontrastbetweenChinaanddevelopedcountries,anddrovehimtomakeuphismindtochangethesituationinChina.Taodeclinedanumberofinvitationsfrommanyfamousuniversitiesandgaveuphighsalariesasacollegeprofessor.Indeed,heestablishedXiaozhuangNormalSchoolinthesuburbofNanjingtodevelopeducationalcauseinruralareas.WhenhereturnedtoChinafromJapanin1939,TaoestablishedYuCaiSchoolinSichuanProvinceforthekidswholosttheirfamilyinSino-JapaneseWar.Hepickedoutthosewithspecialtalentsandtrainedthemtobeusefulmenforthenation.ZhouEnlai,formerChinesepremier,oncepaidavisittothisschoolandgaveahighpraise.
