1.Introduction

Sincetheawakeningofthespringin2014,threemonthsfromApriltoJunewitnessedmyinternshipintheCoolCampDepartmentofNewOrientalEducation&TechnologyGroupInc.,Guangzhou.Withinthetimeframeofthreemonths,Imanagedtolandajobinthedepartmentmainlyinchargeofthreefacets:

1.torecruitthenewteachingstaff;2.toassumetheresponsibilityoftrainingnewteachersandassistants;3.tocompilethenewversionofEnglishtextbooksgearedtoK-12groups.

 

2.GoalsandObjectives

Theprimaryobjectiveoftheinternshipisto:

1.furtherenhancemyorganizationalandmanagerialcapability;2.deviseanappropriatedevelopmentalschemeforthenewblood;3.honemyskillsofcompilationoftextbooks.

 

3.TheOrganizationandmyWorkinit

NewOrientalEducation&TechnologyGroupInc.,viz.NewOriental,wasthefirstChineseeducationalinstitutiontoentertheNewYorkStockExchangein2006,whichisaproviderofprivateeducationalservicesinChina.TheheadquartersofNewOrientalislocatedintheHaidiandistrictofBeijing.ItiscurrentlythelargestcomprehensiveeducationalcompanyinChina.ThebusinessofNewOrientalincludespre-schooleducation,generalcoursesforstudentsofvariousagelevels,onlineeducation,overseasstudyconsulting,andtextbookpublishing.

 

Amongthefourmainbranchesnationwide,theGuangzhouNewOrientalbranchoutclassestheotherthreeintermsofhumanresourcesandgeographicallocation,togetherwiththeuniqueCoolCampDepartmentofWinterandSummerCamp.

 

4.TheGapbetweentheExperienceandmyExpectations

Asisnotedinthepreviousparagraphs,myworkwasroughlydividedintothethreedimensionsabove:

recruitment,training,compiling.

Chronologicallyspeaking,theinitialtaskofmyworkwastoestablishrecruitmentactivitiesinourschool.Themostconspicuousgapbetweenrealityandexpectationconsistedintheinterferenceoftheforcemajeure.Tobemorespecific,intheprocessofthepublicizingtheevent,thepostersandflyersfailedtoefficientlyreachthetargetaudiencenamelythegirlsintheSchoolofForeignLanguagesduetothefactthattheposterswerealwayscoveredbyothercoloredandvariedpostersorbannersofotheractivities.Further,thesecondcaseoftheforcemajeurewasthetimearrangement.Unfortunately,betweenthefirst-stagepreparationandthedayoftheevent,ashortbreakofQingmingFestivalinterruptedtheproceedingsofthepropagation,therebydilutingthestrengthandeffectsofthepopularization.

 

Whatfollowedtherecruitmentwasthetrainingandnurturingofthenewteachersandassistants.CountertothereceivedideasthatthegirlsatforeignlanguagedepartmentaretalkativeandhaveagoodcommandofEnglish,therealityis,theproficiencyofEnglish,theirpersonalpreferences,andthepresentationskillsandstyle,allvariedsignificantlyfromeachindividualtoindividual,whichwasindeedaheadacheformetodeviseareasonableandappropriatetrainingscheme.

 

Ultimately,alsothemostpainstakingly,enormousamountofordealanddifficultiespresentedthemselvesasIplungedintothecompilationofthenewtextbooks.Asisthecasewiththemajorityofintellectuals,asolidcollectionofpublishedmaterialsthatcarrytheirnamesarethesymboloftheirprideandknowledge,thepassporttothepantheonofacademicleaders.Thisfirmlyrootedbeliefplusmyzealforacademicresearch,servedasthecatalystformycompilingthetextbookofEnglishreadingandvocabulary.

 

Nonetheless,onlyinpracticedidIcometothepainfulrealizationthatIwasfarfromacademicallyqualifiedtofulfillthismission.Forexample,inreferencetothedetailedusageofsomekeywordsandphrases,therelevantsentencescontainingthesewordswerenecessitatedrespectivelyinseveralregisterssuchasspokenandwrittenregisters.Ifwedothemath,thenumberofsentencecollectioncouldreachmorethan1000sentences,whichisapparentlybeyondmycapability.

 

5.NewSkillsandInformationGained

Mymanagerialandcoachingskillsareremarkablyhonedbyheedingscrupulousattentionandfindingcreativewaystosettheplansintrain.

 

Whenitcomestothelaunchingoftherecruitment,Ididn’tsetfootinthisrecruitmentsectoruntilthistime.Beingtheleaderofthebigevent,Ididfeelinmybonesthatitwasnotapieceofcaketoreachthecriticalmassofthisactivity,thatis,theessentialcontrivanceofthescheduleaswellasthedesignofthesloganandbannerallhadbornemyscrutiny.Astothemoreconcretetasks,forinstance,thespeechscriptalsohadmyfingerprintsalloverit.Aftertherecruitment,Idobetterunderstandthatattheheartoftherecruitmentistheeffectiveandefficientdisseminationofinformationandpopularization.Asismentionedabove,ashortholidayofQingminghinderedtheprocess,butlatertheconstantbombardmentof“propaganda”inallmediachannelssuchasQQandWechatcounteractedthatnegativeeffects.FranklyIalsodrawalessonfromthis:

itisnevertoolatetoreplenishyourammunitioninthebattleof“propaganda”.

 

Asfarasthetrainingpartwasconcerned,itiswell-establishedfactthatresearchandteachingareinextricablyintertwined.AteacherortrainerisrequiredtoenjoyproficiencyofEnglishfusedwithpresentationskillsnomatterwhatlevelthestudentsare.Forme,therewasamajorshiftfrombeingamerelyteacherforstudentstobeingapioneeroftheteachingteam–greaterresponsibility,betterintellectualresources.

 

Judgingfromtheassignmentscollectedfromdifferentgroupmembers,Iwasabletoputmyselfintheirshoesandthereforedesignatailor-madedevelopmentalscheme.Forexample,forthosewhohadtroubledealingwiththeirmindandlogic,mymindmapofspeech(anexceldocumentwithtimescaleandcontentindicator)wasprovided;whileforthosestrugglingwiththeirPowerPointelaborationIcapitalizedonaperiodoftrainingsessiontoenhancetheiroverallawarenessofagoodandbriefslideshow,eliminatingthemalaisessuchasthedisproportionbetweenthepicturesandfonts.

Typically,thenewlyaddedhighlightsofthetrainingschemerevolvedaroundachievingthelanguageclarityandbrevityviaanold-fashionedbuteffectivemethod–transcription.Whoeverhadachancetoperformhis/herlessonswerestrictlyrequiredtorecordtheentireclassandtranscribetheaudiointoscripts.Peculiarly,Idemandedallofthemshouldnotonlytranscribethemeaningfulwordsbutalsotheredundantwordyexpressionslike“ah”,“uh”andeven“well”.Despitetheoccasionalcomplaints,themethodeventuallybecamethe“silverbullet”totheredundancyofstatementsandthenewteacherswerethusenabledandempoweredtoexpresstheirideasmuchmorefluently.

 

Apartfromthelingualaspect,ahighdegreeofcreativityandinnovationwasexhibitedfromtheteachers’endeavortoincorporatethepopularelementsliketheBigBangTheoryintotheirpresentation.GreatlyimpressedwasIatthesightoftheinnovativeinteractivegamesofwordpuzzles.Inaword,alltheseconstitutedthesourceofbrilliantpedagogicalideas.

 

6.DifficultiesEncountered

Asisstatedinthepreviousparagraphs,theindividualdifferenceofthenewteachingstaffposedgreatobstaclesformetocomeupwithasystematictrainingscheme.

 

Tobetteracceleratetheproductivityineducationaltasks,fourindividualsweregroupedtogetherwithaprominentmemberbeingthegroupleader.ThoughIdidcomprehensivelytakevariousfactorssuchasgender,age,proficiencyintoaccount,eachteamstillexhibitedgreatdifferencerangingfromacademicleveltotheoutputofthetasks.Toencapsulate,itisneveraneasyjobtohandleandguideariotofmembers.

 

Likewise,tobetterillustratethedifficultiesencounteredintheedition,theexhaustivesystemoftheacademicreserveincludes:

1.Phonetics;2.Collocation;3.Idioms;4.DefinitionsfromauthoritativedictionarieslikeOxfordDictionaryandLongmanDictionary;5.ConcordanceofthevocabularyintheCorpusofCollegeEntranceExaminationetc.

 

Therefore,thisherculeantaskwasdelegatedtoallsixgroupsofnewteachers

whoseteamleaderswouldfurtherdeterminethedivisionoflabor.ContrarytothepopularbeliefthatIcouldjustrelaxandunwindleavingthetasktothem,Ifeltobligatedtobetheproofreadertakingheedofeverylittlenuanceofeachentryofthevocabulary,giving“theevileye”tothosetyposetc.

 

Also,providedallthesentenceswerecorrect,acloserexaminationwaslatermadeinevaluationoftheliterarinessandreadabilitywiththepurposethatthestudentscanbetterdigestthem.Torecap,thecompilationofthebookfaroverwhelmedmypreviousconceptsofwritingandedition.

 

7.MyShortcomings

Havingfinishedtheinternship,Igainmoreinsightsintotheroleofateamleaderandmanager.Anexcellentexecutiveisofparamountimportancetotheoperationandcollaborationofanentity.Also,itprovedtomethatcombinedwithoureditorialskills,presentationstrengths,andthecommunitycapabilitiesofthemembersofmyeducationalresearchteam,wearepositionedtousherintoanewversionofteachingschemeandmaterials,whichisdefinitelythebrainchildoftheentireteam.Althoughviewedinthelens
