In1924jazzmusicianandorchestraleaderPaulWhitemandecidedtoorganizeaspecialconcerttoshowthatjazzwasseriousmusic.Gershwinagreedtoposesomethingfortheconcertbeforeherealizedhehadjustafewweekstodoit.Andinthatshorttime,heposedapieceforpianoandorchestrawhichhecalledRhapsodyinBlue.Gershwinhimselfplayedthepianoattheconcert.Theaudiencewerethrilledwhentheyheardhismusic.Itmadehimworld-famousandshowedthatjazzmusiccouldbebothseriousandpopular.

In1928,GershwinwenttoParis.Heappliedtostudyposition(作曲)withthewell-knownmusicianNadiaBoulanger,butsherejectedhim.Shewasafraidthatclassicalstudywouldruinhisjazz-influencedstyle.Whilethere,GershwinwroteAnAmericaninParis.Whenitwasfirstperformed,critics(评论家)weredividedoverthemusic.Somecalledithappyandfulloflife,toothersitwassillyandboring.ButitquicklybecamepopularinEuropeandtheUnitedStates.Itstillremainsoneofhismostfamousworks.
