Bookreportsmayberequiredbyteacherswhowanttoknowwhethertheirstudentshavereadthebooksassignedandhowwelltheyunderstandthosebooks.Iftheyarenotrequired,studentsmayaswellwriteoneortwoforthemselves,forwritingbookreportshelpsstudentstoimprovetheirreadingcomprehensionandtheirabilitytoanalyzeandevaluatebooks.Moreover,itisverygoodwrittenpractice.

Adescriptionoftheauthor’stimesshouldbegiventogetherwithabriefaccountofhislife.Itshouldincludethecircumstancesthatledtothewritingofthebookunderdiscussionandthehistoricalandsocialbackgroundrelatedtothecontentofthebook.Tomakethesethingsclear,thewriterperhapsneedstoreadsomereferencematerial,suchasbiographiesoftheauthorandhistoriesoftheperioddescribedinthebook.
2.WritingoftheBookReport
1)Thesummaryofthebookshouldbeself-contained,clear,andeasytounderstand.Aboveall,itshouldbeobjective.
2)Commentsonandcriticismsofthebookshouldnotbemixedwiththesummary;theycanbelefttothethirdpart.
3)Thesummaryofanoveloraplayisusuallywritteninthepresenttense,whilethatofnonfiction,inthetenseoftheoriginalwork:
forexample,thepasttenseshouldbeusedforahistory,andthepresentforascientificwork.
4)Commentsonandevaluationofthebookfromthethirdandmostimportantpartofabookreport.Inthispartthewriterexpresseshisorherownviewsonthebook,namesitsmeritsanddemerits,anddiscussesitsrelevancetothepresenttime.Thediscussionshouldcenteronthecontentofthebook,buttheauthor’sstyleandtechniquesofpresentation,ifinteresting,canalsobetouchedupon.

Thereisnostandardformforabookreport.However,everybookreportshouldcontainthefollowingfourparts:
1.Identification.Givethetitleandauthor’sname.Ifthebookisonewithwhichyourreadersmaynotbefamiliar,identifyitfurther.Givethenameofthepublisher,theplaceandyearofpublication,theprice,andthenumberofpages.
2.Classification.Awordorphraseearlyinyourreporthelpsthereaderkeepinmindthetypeofbookonwhichyouarereporting;mystery,biography,humor,adventure,andsoon.Yourreadercanthenmentallycompareitwithsimilarbookshehasread.
3.Description.Askillfulbookreportgivesanoverallviewofabookwithoutgivingawayitsoutcome.Yourdescriptionofabookmayincludequotationsorbriefsketchesofscenesoractionthatyouthinkarerepresentativeofthebook.Takenoteswhilereading.Itwillsaveyouthetimeandtroubleofthumbingthroughthebooklatertorelocatequotationsorotherinformation.
4.Evaluation.Youropinionisthemostimportantpartofthereport.Itmaybeeitheryourimmediatereactiontothebookorajudgmentbasedonfurtherstudy.Ineithercase,youropinionshouldbedefiniteandclear.Itshouldbesupportedwithfacts.Youwillwanttocommentoncharacterizations,plot,andrecurringthemes.Compareorcontrastittootherbooksyou’veread.Writeawordofcriticismorpraisewhilereading.Itwillhelpyourecallyourimpressionofthematerialafteryouhavefinishedthebook.
Writingbookreportscanbeavaluableexerciseinclearthinkingandprecisewriting.Italsogivesyoutheopportunitytoimproveyourwritingandtodevelopastyleofyourown.
