Inmyfirstyearinthecollege,IjoinedtheLearningDepartmentoftheStudentUnion.Inmyimpression,theLearningDepartmentwasabiglearningorganizationinmyuniversitytohelpthepeoplewhohadproblemsintheirstudy.Andourorganizationprovidedabiglearningroomformanypeopletoreadandlearnknowledgeandthisroomwasfullofmanybookssothatmanyofstudentscouldmakefulluseofthisroomtosearchtheinformationtheyneed.Ontheotherhand,Icouldalsolearnfrommuchknowledgefromourwork.

OurorganizationwouldalwaysholdregularmeetingineveryWednesdayeveningtocommunicatewitheachotherandsharetheexperienceineveryweek.Wealsobuiltteamstostudytogetherandcommunicatewitheachotherandifourorganizationhadsomeproblemswewouldstaytogetherandputforwardgoodsolutiontosolvetheproblems.Ourmanagerwasnicetousandhegaveessentialpowertothecompetentmemberswhichmadeushaveasenseofbelonging.Inthisway,wewouldtryourbesttomaintaintheorganization’sbenefits.

Inthisorganization,onceIcommunicatedwithmycolleaguesandknewaboutthatwehadasamevisionthatwewerewillingtohelpthepeoplewhoneedtolearnknowledge.SoIhadthepassionandmotivepowertoworkwithmycolleaguesinmyorganization.Myorganizationemphasizedalwayslearningwhichcreatedagoodlearningenvironment.Myorganizationgaveeverymemberchancestomanageourselvestomakeourjobsandstudycombinetogethertightly.Inmyopinion,LearningDepartmentwasagoodplaceformetolearnandthisorganizationwasverysuitableforme.

TheleaderoftheLearningDepartmentwasalearnedpeopleandhewouldgivecapablememberssomesuitablepowerwhichmadeushaveasenseofbelongingandworkharder.Wewouldlearntogetherand

thelearningprocessinvolvedlearninganidentityandaprofessionorskillinadditiontoasenseofbelongingoftotheorganization(Smithetal.2000,p.87).

Thissenseofthebelongingmadeusworkharderforourorganizationandwehadmorepassiontolearnthings.Forexample,wewouldholdregularmeetingeveryweek,andinthemeeting,theleaderwouldrewardthecapablemembersfortheydidwellintheirjobswhichmotivatedustoworkharder.Andwewouldtryourbesttomaintaintheinterestsofourorganization.

Asalearningorganization,weneededtocreate,gainandpasstheknowledge.Atthemeantime,weneededtofixourwrongbehaviorstoadapttonewknowledgeandunderstanding.Cooketal.(2007p.6)claimedthatitwasofimportancetoacknowledgethatlearningwaseffectivefortheorganizationaswellastheindividualandrecognizedthatmistakesweretobelearnedfrom,notpunished.Forinstance,wemembersalwaysstayedtogethertocommunicatewitheachotherandlearnedfromeachother.Inthisgrouplearningmethod,wecouldstudywithinthemaximumlimit.

OurorganizationencouragedlearningcontinuouslyasGouldandBaldwinwoulddefineit.Gould&Baldwin(2004,p.4)explained,thesecorepremisesofthereflectiveapproachtoexpertpracticechimestronglywiththegenericpremiseoflearningorganizationapproachesthatmuchlearningneededtobeongoingandembeddedintheorganizationalcontext.Throughtheongoinglearningwecouldgetalotofknowledgetoenrichourselves.Ourorganizationcouldmakefullusethiswaytocontinuouslyexperience,changeandimprove.

IhaveidentifiedapreviouslyunidentifiedunderlyingassumptionthatIhavemadeaboutlearningorganizationthroughthisprocess.Inmyownopinion,Ithinkthewaysoftheoperatingisverygood.Weorganizationmembersaredividedintogroupstocommunicateandsharetheinformation.Inthisway,wecanlearnmorequicklyandwecanhelpeachother.Wearegatheredinthisorganizationtohelptheotherpeopletolearnknowledgeandthisisourcommonvision.Ithinkthelearningorganizationshouldbestrongandhasanevolutionofadaptivelearningculture.Thelearningorganizationisteam-basedstructurewhichishelpfulforeverymembertostudyknowledge.

IhavealsodecidedIneedtodofurtherreadingintothelearningorganization.Asalearningorganization,theLearningDepartmenthasagoodleadership,andtheinformationispublicandthereisahighparticipationamongusmembersinourorganization.Themembersinthelearningorganizationneedtomoreinformationthattheunlearningorganization.Andthelearningorganizationneedtocorewithdifficultyenvironmentalchangesandavailablyusetheavailableresources.IamgladtojointhisorganizationsinceIlearnalotfromthisorganization.

LastsummerIjoinedtheInteractiveGrouptoEnglandwithsomestudentsinourZhejiangUniversityCityCollege.Inthisactivity,IlearnedalotfromtheEnglandandindeed,therewerealotdifferencesbetweentheforeigncountryandourcountry.Whenwegottothebigcity,Edinburgh,Iwassurprisebytheticketofourtrainticket.SincetheticketoftheEdinburghsaid:

weccouldtakeanytrainwithinonemonth.WhileinChinaoneticketcouldonlytakeatrainonce,andthentheticketwouldbeuseless.

Whenwewerewalkingontheroad,thepasserbywouldalwayssay“hello”tousnomatterwhowewere.ThisphenomenonwasnotverycommoninourChinesemainland.WeChinesewouldjustwalkonourownwayandwalkedinahurrywhichwasnotliketheBritishwalkleisurely.Sometimes,wewerewalkingontheroad,andsuddenlyitbegantorainandwewouldrunawayquicklysothatwecouldnotgetwetwhiletheBritisharestillwalkedslowlywithoutanumbrellaeveniftherainwasheavy.Ithoughtthereasonswhytheygotusedtowalkintherainmaybetheweatherwaschangeableortheculturedifferences.

Andwhatstruckmemostwastheexpressionintheclass.WewouldalsogotoclasswiththeBritishstudentstogether.Andwhentheprofessorraisedaquestiontoletusgivetheanswer,theBritishstudentswouldhandshighandgavesomedifferentanswers,whileweChinesestudentswouldheadsdownandonlyafewpeoplewouldhandsup.Inmyopinion,wetwocountryhadtwodifferentculturesandeducationsystemledtothisphenomenonthattheywerepayingattentiontocreationandpracticeandweemphasizedexam-orientededucation.

Differentcountrieshaddifferentculturesandtheculturesaffectedthenativepeoplegreatly.AsEaeley&Ang(2003,p.56)explained,culturalintelligencedescribedapotentialexpertisetodevelopexpertiseinanewcultureratherthantheexpertiseperse.Whenpeoplefacedanewculture,theyneededtochangethemselvestoadapttothenewenvironmentorthenewcultures.Adaptiontothenewcultureswasimportantsinceifpeoplewhocouldnotadapttotheimpactofthenewenvironmentwouldbecomethevictimsintheimpact.

Wewerenurturedbyourindigenousculturesothatourindigenousknowledgewasdeep-rooted.Thomas(2008,p.299)claimedthat,werecognizedthatour"processview"ofeffectivecross-culturalinteractionbybecomingculturallyintelligentwasbasedonsomeknowledgeofspecificcultural.Itwashardtochangethenativeofus,butwecouldchangeourselvessuperficiallyandtemporarily.WhenIwalkedintheEngland,thepedestrianswouldgreetmewhichmademehavetogreetthemtoo.Atlast,IwasusedtothisphenomenonandIwouldgreetthestrangerfirstlysometimes.Itwasofimportancetoadapttothenewcultures.

Mostpeoplehadasenseofalertandtheycouldnotacceptthenewcultures.Nefzger(ascitedbyEarley&Ang2011,p.88)statedtheculturalintelligencewasaperson’scapabilityforsuccessfuladaptiontonewculturalsetting,thatwas,forunfamiliarsettingattributabletoculturalcontext.Allinall,everyoneneededtoresettheculturevaluestofitthechangeoftheenvironmentorwewouldunaccustomedtotheclimateofanewplace.Forexample,wealwaysatethewestern-stylefoodandafewpeopledidnotgetusedtoeatwestern-stylefoodforalldaywhileIwasusedtoeatit.

IhaveidentifiedapreviouslyunidentifiedunderlyingassumptionthatIhavemadeaboutculturesdifferencethroughthisprocess.IhaveatasteoftotheculturedifferencesbetweentheEnglandandChina.Adaptiontothenewculturesisveryimportantforthepeoplewhomaycomeupagainstproblems.Thedifferentculturesmaycausethedifferentplacehavesomecommunicateproblemsorunaccustomedtotheclimateofanewplace.AndIrecognizethatlearnmoreknowledgeishelpfultoknowaboutthedifferentplaces’culturesandIcanknowwhatthingsIcandoandwhatthingsIcannotdo.Knowthedifferentculturescanmakemedonotrestrictbythechangeofthedifferentcultures.

IhavealsodecidedIneedtodofurtherreadingintoculturalintelligence.Inmyopinion,theculturalintelligenceisakindofabilitytoadapttothenewcultureswhichiswhatiscalledCQ.
