“ThecoolestsportI’veeverdone,”says31-year-oldBryanMartin.HerecentlyfinishedtheHawaiiAdventureRace,withhisteam,theOutsiders.“Althougheveryoneonourteambikesandrunseveryday,itwasagreatchallenge.”Histeamfinishedfifthoutofmorethantwohundredteamsintherace.

Adventureracingisanewsportthatstartedafewyearsago.Init,teamsoffourpeopleracenon-stopacrosslongdistancesindifficultenvironments,24hoursaday.Therearemen’s,women’s,andmixedteams.Someadventureracesarejustoneday,butothersaremuchlonger.

IntheEco-Challenge,oneofthemostfamousraces,teamsmusttravel500kmintendays.Theytravelbyrunning,climbingropes,kayaking,mountainbiking,andhorsebackriding.Everyyear,theEco-Challengeisheldinadifferentcountryandenvironment,likethejunglesofMalaysia,thedesertofMorocco,orthemountainsofCanada.

Speedandstaminaareveryimportantforadventureracers,butthere’sonemoreunusualthingaboutthesport.Towintherace,allteammembersmustfinishtogether.Ifonepersonquits,theteamisoutoftherace.“Youhavetohelpeachother,andyoureallylearntoworktogether,”saysBryanMartin.“Ienjoythatmostofall.”

Indifferentareasoftheworld,athletestrainandcompeteintheirownversionsoftheXGames.Thebestathletescanadvancetotheglobalchampionship.Atthechampionship,teamsfromsixregions(Asia,Australia,Canada,Europe,SouthAmerica,andtheUnitedStates)faceeachother.Therearesummersports(in-lineskating,biking,andskateboarding)andwinterones(skiingandsnowboarding).Most“XGamers”aremale,butthereareafewwomen.Onewoman,inparticular,standsoutfromthecrowd.HernameisFabioladaSilva.She’sanin-lineskaterandshecomesfromBrazil.

Therearetwodifferentin-lineskatingcategories:

parkandvert.Intheparkevent,skaterscompeteonacoursethathasledges,handrails,andotherobstacles.Inthevertevent,skatersdotricksinahalfpipe.Theytrytoflyhighintheairandspin.Fabiolacompetesinbothevents.Shehasbeenskatingforyearsandshehasalwaysdominatedthewomen’sevents.

FabiolawouldliketoseemorewomenintheXGames,butshe’snotafraidoftheguys.Eversinceshereceivedherfirstpairofskatesattheageof12,she’splayedwithboys.Nowsheskatesincompetitionswiththemandshebeatsmanyofthem.

Fabiola’smotherwasahousekeeper.Itwashard,butshesavedhermoneytobuyFabiola’sskates.Itwasagoodinvestment.Fabiolahastraveledabroadforeventsandbecomefamousintheskatingworld.
