   Scientistswentontostudythebrainactivityasitrespondedtoeachwordandrecordedhowitlitupasthereaderscameacrossunusualwords,surprisingphrasesordifficultsentencesintheclassicalworks.Asaresult,thislighteningupprocessofthemindlastedlongerthanthatwhenvolunteersreadcommontexts,encouragingfurtherreading.

   Theresearchalsofoundthatreadingpoetryespeciallyincreasesactivityintherighthemisphere(半球)ofthebrain,anareaconnectedwith“autobiographicalmemory”,drivingthereaderstothinkcarefullyabouttheirownexperiencesbasedonwhattheyhaveread.Theacademicssaidthismeanttheclassicalworksofliteraturearemoreusefulthanself-helpbooks.
