GiantpandaswereoncemorecommonthroughoutmanypartsofAsia.NowtheyarelimitedtosmallpocketsinthreemountainousprovincesofChina.

WhyIsBambooDying?

Inthewild,thegiantpandaeatsonlytwokindsofbambooplants.Oneistheumbrellabamboo;theotheristhefountainbamboo.Bothkindshavealifecyclethatlasts100years.Duringthisperiod,ayoungplantsproutsfromaseedandmaturesintoalargeplantwithmanyspear-shapedleaves.Initshundredthyearthebambooplantflowers,formsseeds,anddies.

LastyeartheumbrellaandthefountainbamboosthatgrowinChinabecame100yearsold.Theplantsgrewfromseedsformedinthelate1870’s.Nowalmostallofthesebambooplantsaredead.Theseedsthatformedbeforetheplantsdiedhavefallentotheground.Youngshootsnowgrowfromtheseeds.However,itwillbemanymonthsbeforetheshootsarelargeenoughtobeusedforfoodbythepandas.Meanwhilethelargeblackandwhiteanimalscontinuetodie.

Linglingalreadyhasamate.HisnameisXingxing.BothcametoWashingtonasagiftfromthePeople’sRepublicofChinain1972.Xingxinghasbeenoldenoughtomatefor5years,butheandLinglinghaveneverbeenabletocompletetheact.
