ToappreciatetherichvarietyofMr.Lawrencewemustreadhislaternovelsandhisvolumesofpoetry.ButSonsandLoversrevealstherangeofhistypicalpower.Herearecombinedandblended(混合的)sortof“realism”andalmostlyric(抒情的)imageryandrhythm.Thespeechofthepeopleisthatofdailylifeandthethingsthathappentothemarenormaladventuresandaccidents;theyfallinlove,marry,work,fail,succeed,anddie.Butoftheirdeeperemotionsandoftherelationsoftheselittlehumanbeingstotheearthandtothestars,MrLawrencemakessomethingneartopoetryandprose(散文)withoutviolatingitsproper“otherharmony”.

Tofindasimilarblendingoftinydailydetailandwideimaginativevision,wemustgobacktotwooldernovelists,HardyandMeredith.IdonotmeanthatMrLawrencederives(源于)directlyfromthemor,indeed,thatheisclearlythedisciple(弟子)ofanymaster.Idofeelsimplythatheisoftheelderstature(名望)ofHardyandMeredith,andIknowofnootheryoungnovelistwhoisquiteworthyoftheircompany.WhenIfirsttriedtoexpressthiscomparison,thisconnection,Iwascontradictedbyafellowcritic,whopointedoutthatMeredithandHardyareentirelyunlikeeachotherandthatthereforeMrLawrencecannotresembleboth.Tobesure,nothingismorehatefulthanforcedcomparisons,nothingmoreboringthantodiscoverparallelsbetweenoneworkofartandanother.Anartist'smasteryconsistsinhisdifferencefromothermasters.Buttoreferayoungmanofgeniustoanolderone,atthesametimepronouncinghisindependenceandoriginality,isafair,ifnotverysuperior,methodofpraisinghim.
