NowWilliamCopelandatDukeUniversityinDurham,NorthCarolina,andhiscolleagueshaveshownthatitcanhavelastingphysiologicaleffectstoo.Theytracked1,420nine-year-oldsrightthroughtheirteens.Eachchildwasseenuptoninetimesduringthestudyandaskedaboutbullying.TheteamthenmeasuredlevelsofC-reactiveprotein(CRP)intheirblood.CRPisamarkerofinflammation(炎症)linkedtohigherriskofcardiovasculardisease(心血管疾病)andproblemslikediabetes.“Becausewewerecollectingbiologicalsamplesthroughout,wewereabletolookatCRPlevelsinsubjectspriortotheirbullyinginvolvement.”saysCopeland.“Thisreallygivesusanideaofthechangesbullyingbringsabout.”
AlthoughCRPlevelsnaturallyriseineveryoneduringadolescence,levelswerehighestinchildrenwhoreportedsufferingfrombullies.Evenattheagesof19and21,childrenwhohadoncebeenbulliedhadCRPlevelsabout1.4timeshigherthanpeerswhowereneitherwrongdoersnorvictims.Inacrueltwist,thebullieshadthelowestlevelsofall,suggestingtheydidn’tsufferthesamehealthrisks.Theymayevenseeabenefitfromtheirbehaviors,thoughCopelandstressesitdoesn’tdefendtheiractions.“Thegoalwouldinsteadbetofindotherwaystoproducethisprotectiveeffectwithoutitbeingatsomeoneelse’sexpense.”hesays.
