THEREASONSFORTHEDHARMAASSEMBLY,ONE

ThusIhaveheard,atonetimetheBuddhadweltatShravastiintheJetaGroveintheGardenoftheBenefactorofOrphansandtheForlorn,togetherwithagatheringofgreatBhikshus,twelvehundredfiftyinall.AtmealtimetheWorldHonoredOneputonhisrobe,tookuphisbowlandenteredthegreatcityofShravastitocollectalms.Afterhehadfinishedhissequentialalms-round,hereturnedtohisdwelling.Whenhismealwascompleted,heputhisrobeandbowlaway.Afterhewashedhisfeet,hearrangedhisseatandsatdown.

AtthattimetheElderSubhutiarosefromhisseatinthegreatassembly,uncoveredhisrightshoulder,placedhisrightkneeontheground,joinedhispalmstogetherrespectfullyandaddressedtheBuddha,"Howrare,WorldHonoredOne,istheThusComeOnewhoprotectsandcareswellforallBodhisattvasandwellfavorsallBodhisattvas.WorldHonoredOne,ifagoodmanorgoodwomanresolveshismindonAnuttarasamyaksambodhi,onwhatshouldherely?

Howshouldhesubduehismind?

"TheBuddhasaid,"Verygood,verygoodSubhuti.Itisasyousay.TheThusComeOneprotectsandcareswellforallBodhisattvasandwellfavorsallBodhisattvas.Nowlistenattentively;Ishalltellyou.AgoodmanorgoodwomanwhoresolveshismindonAnuttarasamyaksambodhishouldthusrelyandthussubduehismind.""Yesindeed,WorldHonoredOne.Iamdelightedandwishtolisten."

THEORTHODOXDOCTRINEOFTHEGREATVEHICLE,THREE

TheBuddhatoldSubhuti,"AllBodhisattvas,Mahasattvas,shouldsubduetheirmindsthus:

'Imustcausealllivingbeings--thosebornfromeggs,wombs,moisture,bytransformation;thosewithform,thosewithoutform,thosewiththought,thosewithoutthought,thosenottotallyendowedwiththought,andthosenottotallywithoutthought--toenterNirvanawithoutresidueandbetakenacrosstoCessation.Yetoftheimmeasurable,numberless,boundlessnumbersoflivingbeingsthustakenacrosstoCessation,thereisactuallynolivingbeingtakenacrosstoCessation.'Why?

Subhuti,ifaBodhisattvahasanappearanceofself,others,livingbeings,oralife,heisnotaBodhisattva."

WONDERFULPRACTICEISTONOTRELYONANYTHING,FOUR

"Moreover,Subhuti,astodharmas,aBodhisattvashouldnotrelyonanythingwhengiving.Thatistosay,whengiving,heshouldneitherrelyonforms,norsounds,smells,tastes,tangibleobjectsordharmas.Subhuti,aBodhisattvashouldgivethus:

heshouldnotrelyonappearances.Why?

IfaBodhisattvadoesnotrelyonappearanceswhengiving,hisblessingsandvirtuesareinconceivableandimmeasurable."Subhuti,whatdoyouthink,isspaceintheeastconceivableormeasurable?

""NoWorldHonoredOne.""Subhuti,isspaceinthesouth,west,north,orintheintermediatedirections,aboveorbelowconceivableormeasurable?

""No,WorldHonoredOne.""Subhuti,theblessingsandvirtuesofaBodhisattvawhodoesnotrelyonappearanceswhengiving,arejustasinconceivableandimmeasurable.Subhuti,aBodhisattvashouldrelyonlyontheteachings."

"Subhuti,whatdoyouthink,isitpossibletoseetheThusComeOneinhisphysicalappearances?

""NoWorldHonoredOne,itisnotpossibletoseeThusComeOneinhisphysicalappearances.Why?

BecausethephysicalappearancesmentionedbytheThusComeOnearenotphysicalappearances."TheBuddhasaidtoSubhuti,"Allappearancesareemptyandfalse.Ifoneseesallappearancesasnoappearances,thenoneseestheThusComeOne."

SubhutiaddressedtheBuddha,"WorldHonoredOne,inthefuturewilltherebelivingbeingswhotrulybelieveuponhearingsuchphrases?

"TheBuddhatoldSubhuti,"Donotsaythat!

InthelastfivehundredyearsaftertheThusComeOne'sCessation,therewillbethosewho,holdingthemoralpreceptsandcultivatingblessings,willbelievesuchphrasesandacceptthemastrue.YoushouldknowthatsuchpeoplehavenotplantedgoodrootswithjustoneBuddha,twoBuddhas,threeBuddhas,four,orfiveBuddhas,buttheyhaveplantedgoodrootsattheplacesofimmeasurabletensofmillionsofBuddhas.TheThusComeOneknowsandseesallpeoplewhohearthesephrases,Subhuti,andhaveevenasinglethoughtofpurefaith.Suchlivingbeingswillthusobtainimmeasurableblessingsandvirtues.Why?

Becausethoselivingbeingsnolongerclingtotheappearancesofself,others,livingbeings,oralife,nortotheappearancesofdharmasornon-dharmas.Why?

Ifthoselivingbeings'mindsclingtoappearances,thatwouldbeattachmenttoaself,others,livingbeingsandalife.Iftheyclingtoappearancesofdharmas,thatwouldbeattachmenttoaself,others,livingbeingsandalife.Why?

Iftheyclingtotheappearancesofnon-dharmas,thatwouldbeattachmenttoaself,others,livingbeingsandalife.Therefore,youshouldnotclingtodharmas;youshouldnotclingtonon-dharmas.BecauseofthisprincipletheThusComeOnealwayssays,'Bhikshus,youshouldallknowthattheDharmaIspeakislikearaft.Youmustletgoofdharmas.Evenmoresoletgoofnon-dharmas.'"

"Subhutianswered,"AsIunderstandwhattheBuddhahassaid,thereisnopredeterminedDharmacalledAnuttarasamyaksambodhi,andtherearenotanypredeterminedDharmaswhichtheThusComeOnecouldspeak.Why?

AlltheDharmawhichtheThusComeOnehasspokencanneitherbeclungtonorspokenof.ItisneitherDharmanornon-dharma.Whyisthatso?

AllWorthyOnesandSagesaredifferentbecauseofUnconditionedDharmas."

"Subhuti,whatdoyouthink,ifapersongaveasagiftthesevenkindsofpreciousgemsinquantityenoughtofillupaThreefoldGreatThousandWorldSystem,wouldsuchapersonobtainmanyblessingsandvirtues?

"Subhutisaid,"VerymanyWorldHonoredOne.Why?

Theseblessingsandvirtuesdonotrefertotheessentialnatureofblessingsandvirtues.Therefore,theThusComeOnesaystheyaremanyblessingsandvirtues.""Ifontheotherhand,apersonweretoacceptandupholdevensofewasfourlinesofversefromthisSutraandspeakthemforothers,thisperson'sblessingswouldsurpasstheblessingsoftheindividualmentionedabove.Why?

Subhuti,allBuddhasandtheirDharmaofAnuttarasamyaksambodhicomefromthisSutra.Subhuti,bythisImeantheBuddhaandtheDharmaarenottheBuddhaandtheDharma."
