FollowingonemillionmiddleagedwomeninBritainfor10years,astudyfindsthatthewidelyheldviewthathappinessenhanceshealthandlongevityisunfounded.

TheresultscomefromthesocalledMillionWomenStudy,whichtookonwomenaged50to69from1996to2001,andtrackedthemwithquestionnairesandofficialrecordsofdeathandhospitaladmissions.Thequestionnairesaskedhowoftenthewomenfelthappy,incontrol,relaxedandstressed,andalsoinstructedthemtoratetheirhealthandlistailmentslikehighbloodpressure,diabetes,depressionoranxiety.

Whentheanswerswereanalyzedstatistically,unhappinessandstresswerenotassociatedwithanincreasedriskofdeath.Itisnotclearwhetherthefindingsapplytomen.

ProfessorPetosaidparticularlyimportantdatacamefrom500,000womenwhoreportedthattheywereingoodhealth,withnohistoryofheartdisease,cancer,orstroke.Aminorityofthesehealthywomensaidtheywerestressedorunhappy,hesaid,butoverthenextdecadetheywerenomorelikelytodiethanwerethewomenwhoweregenerallyhappy.

“Thisfindingrefutes(驳斥)thelargeeffectsofunhappinessandstressondeathratethatothershaveclaimed,”Dr.Petosaid.Unhappinessitselfmaynotaffecthealthdirectly,butitcandoharminotherways,bydrivingpeopletosuicide,alcoholismorotherdangerousbehaviors,hewarned.

Thistypeofstudy,inwhichpeopleinvolveddependsontheirselfassessments,isnotconsideredasreliableasadesignedexperimentwherepeopleinvolvedarepickedatrandomandassignedtoatreatmentorcontrolgroup.Butthehugenumberofpeopleinthisstudygivesitpower.Still,someobserversnotedthatmeasuringemotionsismorenuanced(细微的)andcomplexthansimplydeclaringhappinessorunhappiness.

“Iwouldhavelikedtoseemorediscussionofhowpeopletranslatethesecomplicatedfeelingsintoaselfreportofhappiness,”saidBaruchFischhoff,apsychologistatCarnegieMellonUniversity.

Theresultsofearlierstudieshavebeenmixed,withsomefindingthatunhappinesscausesillnessandothersshowingnolink,Dr.Fischhoffsaid.“Itlookstomelikepeoplehavecollectedalotofdatawithoutfindingaclearsignal,”hesaid.However,aneditorialaccompanyingthestudyinTheLancetnotedthatithadthelargestpopulationsofarinhappinessstudiesandpraiseditsstatisticalmethods.

ProfessorPetosaidhedoubtedwhetherthenewstudywouldchangemanymindsbecausebeliefsabouttherisksofunhappinessaresorooted.“Peoplearestillgoingtobelievethatstresscausesheartattacks,”hesaid.
