1.Introduction

1.1.Scope

Thisphysicalspecificationisintendedtofacilitatethepoint-to-pointcommunicationbetweenelectronicdevices(e.g.,computersandperipherals)usingdirectedhalfduplexserialinfraredcommunicationslinksthroughfreespace.ThisdocumentspecifiestheopticalmediainterfacesforSerialInfrared(SIR)data

transmissionuptoandincluding115.2kbit/s,0.576Mbit/s,1.152Mbit/s,4.0Mbit/sand16Mbit/s.ItcontainsspecificationsfortheActiveOutputInterfaceandtheActiveInputInterface,andfortheoveralllink.ItalsocontainsAppendicescoveringtestmethodsandimplementationexamples.

Overthepastseveralyearsseveralopticallinkspecificationshavebeendeveloped.Thisactivityhasestablishedtheadvantagesofopticalinterfacespecificationstodefineopticallinkparametersneededtosupportthedefinedlinkperformanee.Opticalinterfacespecificationsareindependentoftechnology,applyoverthelifeofthelinkandarereadilytestableforconformanee.TheIrDAserialinfraredlinkspecificationsupportslowcostoptoelectronictechnologyandisdesignedtosupportalinkbetweentwonodesfrom0toatleast1meterapart(20cmforlowpowerparts:

pleaseseeSection4.1)asshowninFigure1(thetwoportsneednotbeperfectlyaligned).

2.GeneralDescription

2.1.Point-to-PointLinkOverview

Theserialinfraredlinksupportsopticallinklengthsfromzerotoatleast1meterwithstandardpowertransceivers(20cmforlowpowertransceivers:

seesection4.1)foraccurate(withinspecifiedbiterrorratio),freespacecommunicationbetweentwoindependentnodes(suchasacalculatorandaprinter,ortwocomputers).

2.2.Environment

TheOpticalInterfaceSpecificationsapplyoverthelifeoftheproductandovertheapplicabletemperaturerangefortheproduct.BackgroundlightandelectricfieldtestconditionsarepresentedinAppendixA.

2.3.ModulationSchemes

Fordataratesuptoandincluding1.152Mbit/s,RZImodulationschemeisused,anda

“0”isrepresentedbyalightpulse.Forratesuptoandincluding115o2ks,theopticalpulsedurationisnominally3/16ofabitduration(or3/16ofa115.2kbit/sbitduration).ForO.576Mbit/sand1.152Mbit/s,theopticalpulsedurationisnominally1/4ofabitduration.

For4.0Mbit/s,themodulationschemeis4PPM.Init,apairofbitsistakentogetherandcalledadatasymbol.Itisdividedinto4“chips”,onlyoneofwhichcontainsan

pulse.For4.0Mbit/s,thenominalpulseduration(chipduration)is125ns.A“1”representedbyalightpulse.

For16.0MbiL匕transmission,theHHH(1,13)codeQalowdulycycle,rate2\(dk)—(1,13)runlengthlimited(RLL)codeZisusedastlicmodulationcodetoachievethe

specifieddatarate.TheHHH(1,13)codeguaranteesforatleastoneemptychipandatmost13emptychipsbetweenchipscontainingpulsesinthetransmittedIRsignal.

The16.0Mbit/sratepacketframestructureisbasedonthecurrentIrDA-FIR(4.0Mbit/s)frameformatwithmodificationsintroducedwherenecessarytoaccommodatetherequirementsthatarespecifictothenewmodulationcode.Furthermore,theHHH(1,13)codeisenhancedwithasimplescrambling/descramblingschemetofurtheroptimizethedutycycle.

3.MediaInterfaceDescription

3.1.PhysicalRepresentation

AblockdiagramofoneendofaserialinfraredlinkisshowninFigure2.Additionalsignalpathsmayexist.Becausetherearemanyimplementationalternatives,thisspecificationonlydefinestheseriallyencodedopticaloutputandinputsignalsat[3].

Inthediagram,theelectricalsignalstotheleftoftheEncoder/Decoderat[1]areserial

bitstreams.Fordataratesuptoandincluding1.152Mbit/s,theopticalsignalsat[3]arebitstreamswitha"0"beingapulse,anda"1"isabitperiodwithnopulse.For4.0Mbit/s,a4PPMencodingschemeisused,witha“1”beingapulseanda“0”

chipwithnopulse.For16.0Mbit/s,aHHH(1,13),(d,k)=(1,13)runlengthlimited(RLL),lowdutycycle,rate2/3modulationcodeisused.TheHHH(1,13)codeguaranteesforatleastoneemptychipandatmost13emptychipsbetweenchipscontainingpulsesinthetransmittedIRsignal.AsummaryofpulsedurationsforallsupporteddataratesappearsinTable2inSection4.1.

Theelectricalsignalsat[2]aretheelectricalanalogsoftheopticalsignalsat[3].Fordataratesuptoandincluding115.2kbit/s,inadditiontoencoding,thesignalat[2]isorganizedintoframes,eachbyteasynchronous,withastartbit,8databits,andastopbit.Animplementationofthis(upto115.2kbit/s)isdescribedinAppendixB.Fordataratesabove115.2kbit/s,dataissentinsynchronousframesconsistingofmanydatabytes.DetailoftheframeformatisfoundinSection5.

3.2.OpticalAngleDefinitions

Theopticalaxisisassumedtobenormaltothesurfaceofthenode'sfacethatcontainstheopticalport(SeeFigure3).Forconvenience,thecenteroftheopticalportistakenasthereferencepointwheretheopticalaxisexitstheport.Ifthereisasymmetry,aslongasthemaximumhalfangleofthedistributionisnotgreaterthantheallowableHalf-AngleRangemaximum,andtheminimumhalfangleofthedistributionisnotlessthantheHalf-AngleRangeminimum,theHalf-AngleRangespecificationismet.

4.MediaInterfaceSpecifications

4.1.OverallLinks

Therearetwodifferentsetsoftransmitter/receiverspecifications.Thefirst,referredtoasStandard,isforalinkwhichoperatesfrom0toatleast1meter.Thesecond,referredtoastheLowPowerOption,hasashorteroperatingrange.Therearethreepossiblelinks(SeeTable1below):
