TheStructureofIELTSTest

TheIELTStesthastwokinds:

theAcademictest（ormodule）andtheGeneralTrainingtest（ormodule）.Themodulethatyoutakedependsonthereasonthatyouaretakingitfor.Generallyspeaking,theAcademicModuleisintendedforthosewhowanttoenrollinuniversitiesandotherinstitutionsofhighereducationandforprofessionalssuchasmedicaldoctorsandnurseswhowanttostudyorpracticeinanEnglish-speakingcountry.TheGeneralTrainingModuleisintendedforthosepeoplewhoplantoundertakenon-academictrainingortogainworkexperience,orforimmigrationpurposes.

ThefollowingfeaturesareincorporatedintheIELTStest:

◆Avarietyofaccentsandwritingstylesarepresentedintextmaterialsinordertominimizelinguisticbias.

◆BothAcademicandGeneralTrainingmodulestryandreflectreallifesituationstotestwhetheracandidatewouldsurviveinEnglishspeakingsocialandacademicenvironments.

◆Itcoversthefourlanguagesskills:

listening,reading,writingandspeaking.ThelisteningandspeakingtestsareexactlythesamefortheAcademicandGeneralTrainingmodulesbutthereadingandwritingtestsaredifferent.

◆Thefirstthreemoduleslistening,reading,writingaregenerallytakeninonedaywhilethespeakingmodulemaybetakenattheperiodofsevendaysbeforeoraftertakingotherthreemodules.Thereisnobreakbetweenthemodules.Thetestaredesignedtocoverfullrangeofabilityfrombandscalescore（0to9）i.e.fromnonusertoexpertuser.

◆Thetestconsistsofacombinationofreal-lifesituationsinvolvingdailyEnglishaswellasacademicEnglish.EspeciallytheIELTSspeakingtestputsthecandidateandtheexaminerinareal-lifecommunicationsituationandsoprovidesanaccurateassessmentofthecandidate'sgenuineEnglishability.

TheIELTSListeningTestisthesamefortheACandGTmodules.CandidateswilllistentoatapewhichisplayedonlyONCEandansweraseriesofquestions.Thetestisinfoursectionswith10questionsineach（ie:

atotalof40questions）andwilllastforabout30minuteswithanextra10minutesattheendtotransferanswerstotheanswersheet.

Thispartconsistsofanumberofrecordedtexts,thedifficultyofwhichincreasesasthetestprogresses.

ThetextsincludeamixtureofmonologuesandconversationsandfeatureavarietyofEnglishaccentsanddialects.

IELTSAcademicReadingTesthas3sectionswith40questionsbasedon1ormorereadingtextspersection.ThelengthoftheAcademicreadingtestwillbebetween2000and2750words.Candidatesaregivenaquestionpaperandananswerpaper.Theymaywriteonthequestionpaperbuttheymaynotremoveitfromthetestroomafterthetest.Allanswersmustbeputontothereadinganswersheetbeforetheendofthehour-thereisnoextratimeforthecandidatestotransfertheiranswerstotheanswerpaper.

Therearetwotasks.Forthefirsttask,candidatesarerequiredtowriteareportofatleast150wordsbasedonthematerialfoundinatable,alinegraph,abarchart,adiagramorapictureoracombinationoftheseinputforms,demonstratingtheirabilitytodescribeandexplaindata.

Forthesecondtask,candidatesarerequiredtowriteashortessayofatleast250wordsinresponsetoanopinionoraproblem,demonstratingtheirabilitytodiscussissues,constructanargumentandusetheappropriatetone.

Speaking

Time:

11-14minutes

TheIELTSSpeakingTestisthesamefortheACandGTmodules.Thetestisaface-to-faceinterviewbetweenoneexaminerandonecandidatetoassessthecandidate’sabilitytorespondtoquestionstospeakatlengthonafamiliartopicandtheabilitytointeractwiththeexaminer.

TheSpeakingtestisrecorded.Itconsists3parts:

Part1Thispartbeginswithsomegeneralintroductoryquestions.Thenitisfollowedbysomequestionsonpersonalinformationsimilartothetypeofquestionsonewouldaskwhenmeetingsomeoneforthefirsttime.Finallytheexaminerasksaseriesofquestionsof2topicsofgeneralinterest.（4-5minutes）

Part2Thispartisamonologue（1personspeaking）bythecandidate.Theexaminerwillgivethecandidateacardwithasubjectandafewguidingquestionsonit.Thecandidatetmusttalkfor1to2minutesonthissubject.Theexaminerdecidesontheexactlength.Thecandidatehasoneminutetoprepareforhistalkandisprovidedwithsomepaperandapencilinordertomakesomebriefnotes.Afterthecandidate'stalk,theexaminerwillaskoneortwobriefquestionsfinishoffthesection.（3-4minutes）

Part3Inthispart,theexaminerwillasksomemorequestionsgenerallyrelatedtothesubjectspokenaboutinpart2.Thesequestionswillbemoredemandingandrequiresomecriticalanalysisonthepartofthecandidate.（4-5minutes）

TheResultofIELTSTest

MarkingofIELTStestiscarriedoutatthetestcentrebytrainedexaminerswhoseworkiscloselymonitored.ThisensuresthatIELTStestresultsareavailablewithoutanyadministrativedelay.

ResultsareavailablewithintwoweeksofthetestandTestReportFormsaresentbythetestcenterstothecandidatesandtothesponsor（s）/receivinginstitution（s）.Testcentersarenotpermittedtogiveresultsoutoverthephone,norbyfaxore-mail.

IELTSTestScores

IELTSprovidesaprofileofacandidate’sabilitytouseEnglish.CandidatesreceivescoresonaBandScalefrom1to9.Ascoreisreportedforeachmoduleofthetest.TheindividualmodulescoresarethenaveragedandroundedtoproduceanOverallBandScore.OverallBandScoresandListeningandReadingscoresarereportedinwholeandhalfBands;WritingandSpeakingBandScoresarereportedinwholeBandsonly.
