[1]Havinggoodoldfriendsisagoodthing,butmakingnewonescanbeevenbetter.Nomatterwhatageweare,allofusappreciatethesupportandhelpwhichfriendsgiveus.Thehelpmaybeforonlyasmallthing,oritmaybeforsomethingthatcouldsaveourlife.Thesizeofthehelporsupportisnotreallythemostimportantthing,butthefactofhavingfriendsisveryimportant.
[2]I'vejustmadeanewfriend,Joan.She'snotjustanotherpersonIcantalkwithorwavetoaswepassoneanotheronthestreet,butagoodfriend.Sheissomeonewhowillgooutwithmeforlunch,ordropbymyhomeforacupoftea.SheissomeonewhowilllistenandmakemefeelunderstoodthenexttimeImayfeelsadorworriedfornoapparentreason.
[3]Thisisnosmallmatterforme.Ibarelyhaveenoughtimeorenergytokeepupwithmyoldfriends,letalonemakenewones.But,asIgrowolder--andIamnow35yearsold--itisimportanttometohaveasafetynetoffriends.Holeskeepopeningupinthenetasoldfriendsmoveaway.I'vegottospendtheenergynowtoincludenewfriends.
[4]Makingfriendsisalotlikedatingafteraterriblebreakup.Youhesitateanddragyourfeetbecauseyoucan'tbelieveyouhavetostartoveragain.Butwhenyoudo,it'snothalfashardasyouthoughtitwouldbe,andit'stwiceasrewardingasyoumighthavehoped.
