Clearlydefiningthepurposeforcollectingthedataisimportant.butoftenoverlooked.Thepurposeshouldtiebacktothemissionstatementorobjectiveoftheriskmanagementprogram.Theunderlyingreasonmayvarydependingontheuser,butitishopedthatthecommonlinkwillbethedesiretocreateabetterunderstandingofthepipelineanditsrisksinordertomakeimprovementsintheriskpicture.

VI.Conceptualizingariskassessmentapproach

Asthefirstandarguablythemostimportantstepinriskmanagement,anassessmentofriskmustbeperformed.

Manydecisionswillberequiredindeterminingariskassessmentapproach.Whilealldecisionsdonothavetobemadeduringinitialmodeldesign.itisusefultohavearathercompletelistofissuesavailableearlyintheprocess.Thismighthelptoavoidbacktrackinginlaterstages,whichcanresultinsignificantnonproductivetimeandcost.Forexample,istheriskassessmentmodeltobeusedonlyasahigh-levelscreeningtoolormightitultimatelybeusedasasteppingstonetoariskexpressedinabsoluteterms?
