Yorkshire,Englandwasthesettingfortwogreatnovelsofthe19thcentury.ThesewereCharlotteBronte’sJaneEyreandEmilyBronte’salsoagiftednovelist,andherbookshavethesameextraordinaryqualityashersisters’.

TheirfatherwasPattickBronte,borninIreland.Hemovedwithhiswife,MariaBronte,andtheirsixsmallchildrentoHaworthinYorkshirein1820.Soonafter,Mrs.Bronteandthetwoeldestchildrendied,leavingthefathertocarefortheremainingthreegirlsandaboy.

Charlottewasbornin1816,Emilywasbornin1818andAnnein1820.TheirbrotherBranwellwasbornin1817.Lefttothemselves,thechildrenwroteandtoldstoriesandwalkedoverthehills.Theygrewuplargelyself-educated.Branwellshowedagreatinterestindrawing.Thegirlsweredeterminedtoearnmoneyforhisarteducation.Theytookpositionsasteachersortaughtchildrenintheirhomes.

Aschildrentheyhadallwrittenmanystories.Charlotte,asayounggirl,alonewrote22books,eachwith60to100pagesofsmallhandwriting.Therefore,theyturnedtowritingforincome.By1847,CharlottehadwrittenTheProfessor,Emily,WutheringHeightsandAnne,AgnesGrey.AftermuchdifficultyAnneandEmilyfoundapublisher(出版商);buttherewasnointerestshowninCharlotte’sbook.(Itwasnotpublisheduntil1859.)However,onepublisherexpressedaninterestinseeingmoreofherwork.JaneEyrewasalreadystarted,andshehurriedlyfinishedit.Itwasacceptedatonce;thuseachofthesistershadabookpublishedin1847.

JaneEyrewasimmediatelysuccessful;the_other_two,however,didnotdosowell.PeopledidnotlikeWutheringHeights.Theysaiditwastoowild,tooanimal-like.ButgraduallyitcametobeconsideredoneofthefinestnovelsintheEnglishlanguage.Emilylivedonlyashortwhileafterthepublicationofherbook,andAnnediedin1849.CharlottepublishedShirleyin1849,andVillettein1853.In1854shemarriedArthurBellNicholls.Butonlyayearlater,shediedoftuberculosis(肺结核)ashersistershad.
