DrDianFossey,oneoftheworld'sleadingwomenscientists,hadaremarkablecareer.Thework—shedevotedherlifetoprotectingandstudyingthemountaingorillas(大猩猩)ofAfrica—hasprovedhighlyeffectiveandhasresultedinthesteady(平稳的)increaseofthismostendangeredgreatapes.

FosseymadeherfirsttriptoAfricain1963.Threeyearslater,shereturnedtoAfricatobeginalongtermstudyofthemountaingorillas.ShesetupcampintheDemocraticRepublicofCongobutmovedtoRwandabecauseofpoliticalreasonsin1967.Sheestablishedher“Karisoke”ResearchCentrecamponSeptember24,1967.

Fossey'saimsweretostudygorillaecology(生态学)andsocialorganization.Shefoundthatinordertoachievethis,sheneededtorecognizeindividualgorillas,whichrequiredthatthegorillasgetusedtoherpresence(出现).Bycopyinggorillas'behaviourandsounds,Fosseybegantogaintheirtrust,andin1970anadultmalegorillashehadnamed“Peanuts”reachedouttotouchherhand.

CloseobservationsoverthousandsofhoursenabledFosseytogainthegorillas'trustandbringforthnewknowledgeabouttheirbehaviour.StoriesandphotographsofherworkwerepublishedinNationalGeographicMagazineandelsewhere.

In1977,oneofFossey'sfavoritegorillas,Digit,waskilledbypoachersandsheestablishedtheDigitFundtohelpraisemoneyforgorillaprotectioneffortsinthesameyear.

OnDecember26,1985,FosseywasmurderedwhilegoingbacktoherhouseinKarisoke.Herbodywasdiscoveredneartheresearchcentre.Mostprobably,DianFosseyhadbeenkilledbythepoachersshe'dfoughtagainst.Onhertombstone(墓碑):

“Noonelovedgorillasmore...”
