Notsolongago,hardcoverbooksweretheonlytypeofbooks.Beforetheappearanceofmassproduction,printrunswerelimited,andbookswerehard-boundandexpensive.Aroundthe1930s,thatchangedwiththeproductionofmass-producedpaperbackbooks,whichconsistedwithahugesurgeinreadingasaleisureactivityaroundWorldWarII.Paperbackbooksweremoreaffordableandcheapertoproduce,whichstillholdstruetoday.

Butthemajorreasonwhybookscomeoutashardcoversisthatpeoplebuythem,despitetheirhighercost.TheNewYorkTimescomparesittomoviesbeingreleasedintheatersseveralmonthsbeforetheyarriveonDVD.“Justasfilmfansliketoseefilmsonthebigscreen,collectorsenjoythehardback’ssuperiorquality,”accordingtoTheTimes.Andbecausethey’reprofitable,publisherscangainmorefromhardcovers,which“willoftensellattwicethepriceoftheirpaperbackeditionbutdonotcosttwiceasmuchtoproduce,”Jonesexplains.
