TosaythatApple'sdoingthingsdifferentlywouldbeanunderstatement.Withthe4.7-inchiPhone6andthe5.5-inchiPhone6Plus,thecompanyintroducedtwonewhigh-endphonesatthesametime,bothwithacompleteredesignandamuchlargerscreensizethananyiPhonethatcamebefore.Gonearethedaysof3.5-inchand4-inchphonesthat,atonetime,seemedtoprovidemorethanampleamountsofscreenspace.Now,thenewiPhonesmaketheirpredecessorslooklikethetinyhandsetBenStillerusedinZoolander.Themarkethaschanged,anditwashightimeAppledidthesame.

EventhoughthisisApple'sfirstattemptatbuildinglargephones,it'snotbreakingnewground--infact,itfeelsmorelikethecompanyiscatchingupthaninnovating.Tobefair,findingafreshtakeisadifficultthingtodointhiscrowdedspace:

Samsung'sGalaxyNoteseries,whichstartedoutat5.3inchesandisnowupto5.7,issellingbythemillions,andmostcompetingflagshipsaren'tmuchsmaller.Basically,Applewouldbeleavingmoneyonthetableifitdidn'taddressthissegmentofthemarket.Sohowdidthecompanydoonitsfirsttryatlargephones?

Asidefromthescreensizeandafewminorhardwaredifferences,theiPhone6and6Plusareidentical.UnlikeApple'slastfourflagships（the4tothe5s）,whichsportedasquarish,blockyshape,the6seriesfeaturessoft,roundedsides.Notcountingtheglassscreen,theentireframeisconstructedofaluminum,similartothematerialAppleusesonitsMacBooks.

Asyou'llseeinmyiOS8review,Apple'sfollowingadesignapproachcenteredon"continuity"--theideathatitsproductsshouldworkseamlesslywitheachother.ThisisevidentintheiPhone6'shardwareaswell.The5and5shadstraightsidesthatmetthefrontandbackviachamferededges.Onthe6,Appleoptedforaunibodybuild;thebubbled-outsidesandflatbackareconstructedfromonecontinuouspieceofmaterial.Meanwhile,thefrontglasspaneltapersdowneversoslightlyattheedge,producinganuninterruptedlook.I'llalwayshaveasoftspotforthechamferededgesonthe5and5s,butthe6and6Plusfeelfresh,especiallyafteryearsofonlymodestdesigntweaks.

BothiPhonesarethinnerthantheirpredecessor.Whereasthe5swas7.6mmthick,the6comesinat6.9mm,withthe6Plusmeasuringahairthickerat7.1mm.Idon'talwayssubscribetothe"thinnerisbetter"mantra,butit'sabenefitinthiscasebecauselargeriPhoneswouldn'tfeelascomfortableiftheyhadthesameshapeasthe5s.IfIhadtochoosebasedonin-handfeelalone,I'dpickthe6overthePlus.Icanstillwrapmyfingersaroundthe6justaseasilyasIcouldwiththe5s（anditscurvedsidesdon'tcutassharplyastheedgesonthe5s）,butthelarge-screened6Plusis...well,it'smanageable.

There'snoavoidingit:

ThePlusisevenbiggerthanitlooks.It'seasiertoacclimatetothePlusifyou'realreadyusedtolargephones,buteventhen,thisisamassivepieceofkit.Let'sdoaclosecomparisonwiththe5.7-inchSamsungGalaxyNote3,forinstance（Ihaveareviewunithandy,andtheunreleasedNote4hassimilardimensions）.ThePlusisnearly7mmtaller,1.4mmnarrowerand1.2mmthinnerthantheNote.Botharehuge,andtheirwidthcanfatigueeventhebiggestofhandsifyouholdonlongenough.Whenyouhaveabighandset,yourfingersneedtosecureafirmgrip;theNote'sstraight,ridgedsidesandtexturedbackmakeforarelativelyeasygrip.Withthe6Plus,though,thosenarrow,roundededgesfeelsharperwhenthetipsofyourfingersaregraspingonfordearlife,andthealuminumisslipperier.Igotusedtothedesign,butittakestime.

iPhone6versustheGalaxyNote3

Butaphone'sscreensizedoesn'thavetodictatehowlargethedeviceitselfis.TaketheLGG3,a5.5-inchphonewiththeexactoppositein-handfeel.ComparedwiththeLGG3,thePlusisnearly12mmtaller,3.2mmwiderand1.8mmthinner;LG'slarge-screenedoptionhasasmallerbezelandarchedbackthatfitthenaturalcontoursofmyhandextremelywell.Itfeelsmuchmorecomfortabletoholdforlongperiodsoftime,andIneverworryaboutitslippingoutofmyhands.

Boththe6and6PlususeanIPSRetinaHDdisplay,butthePlusisevenmorehigh-defthanthe6.Ithasascreenresolutionof1,920x1,080,whichmeansyou'llgetapixeldensityof401pixelsperinch.Ontheflipside,the6maxesoutat1,334x750,whichtranslatesinto326ppi.（That'sthesamescreendensityasthe5s.）Bothdisplaysaresharp,butIdoseesomeminordifferencesbetweenthetwowhenIlookatthemsidebyside.Specifically,thePlus'textandimagesaresharper,withnojaggedlineswhatsoever.Thatsaid,Idon'tthinkit'senoughtosteeryoufromonedevicetotheother;theybothlookfantasticfromafewinchesaway.Additionally,thecolorrepresentationonbothphonesislesssaturatedthantheSuperAMOLEDpanelontheNote3,andisextremelyclosetothecolorsonaRetinadisplayMacBookPro.

WiththeRetinaHDdisplay,Appleisalsointroducingwhatit'scalling"dual-domainpixels,"whicharrangethedisplay'ssubpixelsintoachevron-likepatterndesignedtocompensateforthecontrastthatnormallyshowsupwhenyoulookatthescreenfromobliqueangles.Italsohelpsproducedeeperdarksandsharpertext;bothnewiPhoneshavebrighterwhitesthanthe5s,butthePlushasthewarmesttintofthethree.TheviewinganglesareindeedamongthebestI'veseen,andit'sgreattoseeAppleincorporatethistechnologyintoitslatestproducts.Allthatsaid,it'sworthnotingthatwhileApplemakesthisscreentechnologysoundbrand-new,it'sactuallybeenusedbeforeonphonesliketheHTCOneM7andtheOneX.

Overtheyears,Apple'scontinuedtofine-tuneitsreputationforbuildingdevicesthatcombinesolidbuildqualitywithapremiumdesign.WhilethesenewiPhonesgenerallycontinuethattradition,thereareacouplequirksthataredifficulttoun-see.Thefirstistheexcessiveuseofantennalinesontheback.Thetwostripesstretchingacrossthetopandbottomsectionsenhancethelookofthephone'srear--muchliketheHTCOneseries--buttherearetwounsightlylinesthatfollowtheupperandlowerperimeter,andtheystickoutlikeasorethumb.Secondly,thoughthephonesgotthinner,thecameramoduledidnot;theresultisalensthatsticksoutfromtherestofthechassis,whichincreasesthelikelihoodofthecasingandlensgettingscratched.

Iam,ofcourse,nitpicking.Afterall,analuminumphoneneedstohaveopeningsforantennastogetasignal,andthat'spreciselywhatthestripesonthesidesandbackdo.Unfortunately,though,theydodetractfromthedevice'sbeauty,notenhanceit.Asforthecamera,manyflagshipphonescomewithtinyhumpsaroundthecameramoduletocompensatefortheextradepththeyrequire,butIwould'veratherseenApplegowithadesignthat'slesssevere.（Update:

Afewfolkshaverightlypointedoutthatthelensissapphire,soscratchesshouldn'tbeanissue.Still,itsprominencecomparedtotherestofthechassisremainsadesigndistraction.）

Onefinalconcern:

Thephonesarepronetoscratchesifyou'renotcareful.Afterjustadayofuse,Istartednoticingafewsmallmarksonthebacksofbothdevices.ThemostextremethingIdidtothephonesduringthistimewasslidethemaroundonanofficetable.Granted,acasewillresolvealloftheseissues,butunfortunately,casesalsoaddafairamountofbulk,andI'vealwayspreferredshowingoffmyphonesinalltheirbeauty.

NFC

Apple'scomingoutwithamobilepaymentserviceinOctobercalledApplePay.Ihaven'tbeenabletotestitoutyet,soI'llrevisitthatwhenitbecomesavailable.Onceit'supandrunning,it'lluseawirelessstandardknownasNear-FieldCommunications（NFC）thatcomesbuiltintotheiPhone6and6Plus.Inshort,atransmitteronyourdevicecancommunicatewithareceiverlocatedjustafewmillimetersaway;thisisincrediblyusefulformobilepaymenttransactionsbecausetheshortdistancemakesitmoresecurethananyotherwirelessconnection,soyoudon'thavetoworryaboutathirdpartygettingunauthorizedaccesstoyoursensitiveinformation.
