Day1:
NoTearsintheWriter,NoTearsintheReader
写申请大学的essay是一件令人头疼的事,你要做的是在申请表中展示一个有趣的、爱思考的、对一些事情富有热情的你。
可能这种事情你会跟自己最好的朋友或老师倾诉过,但是却始终不了解如何向AO展示。
Stanford的AO建议申请者把自己的文章给家长、老师或朋友看一下,这样做的目的是为了让这个文章能够反映出申请者自己的语调。
Inreadingyourwriting,wewanttohearyourindividualvoice.Writeessaysthatreflectwhoyouare;usespecific,concretedetailsandwriteinnaturalstyle.Beginworkontheseessaysearly,andfeelfreetoaskyourparents,teachers,andfriendstoprovideconstructivefeedback.Whenyouaskforfeedbackonanessaydraft,askiftheessay’stonesoundslikeyourvoice.Itshould.Yourparents,teachers,andfriendsknowyoubetterthananyone.Iftheydon’tbelievethatyouressaycapturewhoyouare,howyouwrite,orwhatyoubelieve,surelytheadmissionscommitteewillbeunabletorecognizewhat’smostdistinctiveaboutyou.
如果属于以下情况中的一种,可能从开始动笔起就觉得很艰难了:
(1)觉得自己的文章内容太过隐私而不能跟其他人分享讨论;
(2)不喜欢讨论和自己有关的事情;
(3)觉得要找出自己的个性优势太难了;
(4)对自己这方面的写作能力极不自信;
UniversityofWisconsin-Madison曾说“即便是具有海明威文学特色风格的个人陈述,也不会对申请起到决定性作用,但是有很多学生还是愿意把essay当做营销自己的绝佳机会。
尤其是当一个学生的其他背景中有软档的时候,比如:
有一门课程的成绩不佳,学生可以在essay中解释。
”用他们AO的话说“Wereallyrelyonthatpersonalstatementtogetabettersenseofwheretheapplicantiscomingfromandwhereheorsheisgoing.”
所以,相信自己的人生有不少重要的时刻和意义是很重要的,把它们真实地反映出来才能让AO了解一个活生生的你。
要记住show(你看到的、听到的、尝到的、闻到的、触碰到的、内心感受到的,要利用事实、数据、对话以及阅读到的或听说到的细节)。
诗人RobertFrost曾说“Notearsinthewriter,notearsinthereader.”
生动的写作能够让读者清楚地感受到作者的思想、创新的过程等,让别人感受到这个过程时,他们对你的文章就会留下更深的印象。
TheCollegeApplicationEssay的作者SarahMyersMcGinty也曾说:

Day2:
ALookatEssayQuestions
当你已经确定自己要申请的学校了,就可以查看你要写作的所有题目,然后思考如何利用每个学校提供的各种问题去最大程度布局、展示自己的经历、思想和技能。
虽然我们已经不止一次地看过这些题目,但还是希望你们能再看一遍这些Commonapp的题目:
1.Evaluateasignificantexperience,achievement,riskyouhavetaken,orethicaldilemmayouhavefacedanditsimpactonyou.
2.Discusssomeissueofpersonal,local,national,orinternationalconcernanditsimportancetoyou.
3.Indicateapersonwhohashadasignificantinfluenceonyou,anddescribethatinfluence.
4.Describeacharacterinfiction,ahistoricalfigure,oracreativework(asinart,music,science,etc.)thathashadaninfluenceonyou,andexplainthatinfluence.
5.Arangeofacademicinterests,personalperspectives,andlifeexperiencesaddsmuchtotheeducationalmix.Givenyourpersonalbackground,describeanexperiencethatillustrateswhatyouwouldbringtothediversityinacollegecommunity,oranencounterthatdemonstratedtheimportanceofdiversitytoyou.
6.Topicofyourchoice.
第2题和第4题对于那些不喜欢把文章重点放在自己身上的人去展示别人或事物对自己的影响;第5题对于移民家庭的申请者会挺有意义,他们可以讨论在去到一个新的国度时遇到和克服的重重阻力,这个问题同样适用与那些向往大学校园内多元化环境的学生:
一个建立国际学生社团的高中生叙述自己组建社团的过程,以及这对于自己学校和学生的帮助,特别是对于他自己的意义;
一个参加了国际体育比赛的人在与其他国家选手竞技的过程中体会到多元化;
一个从墨西哥移民到美国的学生,讨论自己对西班牙语成为国际语言的看法以及想要把考驾照的教材翻译成各国文字的想法。
这6个题目其实已经包含了客户可以展示的经历中的很多部分了,如果你遇到不在common系统中的学校,你可以转换这些题目,也可以利用那些题目去开拓你对Commonapp题目的思路:

”于是,申请者可能就会把哪怕是再小的社区活动写在essay中,将这个小小的经历与自己的思考、收获和之后的打算结合在一起。
没有人在申请前就知道自己要写些什么essay,然而,把自己的经历和兴趣与essay题目搭配得当是很重要的,就像家长们说的一样,要投学校所好。

FocusonSignificantPersonalAchievement
在写作essay的时候,最艰难的就是在你的经历中寻找最适合作为essay素材的内容,所以在这里,提供一些问题与学生们回答的范例供大家参考,在之后的一个月内,会给大家越来越多的范例,希望能够启发大家。
你们也可以用你们觉得不错的问题去跟客户讨论,寻求客户的个性优势所在。
当你们搜集了一系列的答案之后,找出最好的那些答案,来写作essay。
