Althoughnursesdonotdiagnose,theyplayanextremelyvaluableroleinthisprocessbyobservingcloselyforsigns,encouragingthepatienttotalkabouthimselfandhissymptoms,andthenreportingthisinformationtothedoctor.Oncethepatient’sdisorderisknown,thedoctorprescribesacourseoftreatment,alsoreferredtoastherapy4.Manymeasuresinthiscourseoftreatmentarecarriedoutbythenurseunderthephysician’sorders.
Inrecentyearsphysicians,nursesandotherhealthworkershavetakenonincreasingresponsibilitiesinprevention5.Throughoutmostofmedicalhistory,thephysician’saimhasbeentocureapatientofanexistingdisease6.However,themodernconceptofpreventionseekstostopdiseasebeforeitactuallyhappens—tokeeppeoplewellthroughthepromotionofhealth.Avastnumberoforganizationsexistforthispurpose,rangingfromtheWorldHealthOrganization（WHO）onaninternationalleveldowntolocalprivateandcommunityhealthprograms7.Arapidlygrowingresponsibilityofthenursingprofessioniseducatingindividualpatientstowardthemaintenanceoftotalhealth—physicalandmental.
