AftergraduatingfromOxford,TolkienservedinWorldWarI.In1917,whilerecoveringfromtrenchfever,hebegancomposingthemythologyforTheRings.AsaprofessorofAnglo-Saxonin1930satOxford,TolkienwaspartofaninformaldiscussiongroupcalledtheInklings,whichincludedseveralwriters.ThegroupwassoonlisteningtochaptersofTolkien’simaginativework“TheHobbit”.
