JohnRonaldReuelTolkienwasborninSouthAfricain1892.Hisparentsdiedwhenhewasachild.LivinginEnglandwithhisaunt,Tolkienandhiscousinsmadeupplaylanguages,ahobbythatledtoTolkien’sbecomingskilledinWelsh,Greek,Gothic,OldNorseandAnglo-Saxon.

AftergraduatingfromOxford,TolkienservedinWorldWarI.In1917,whilerecoveringfromtrenchfever,hebegancomposingthemythologyforTheRings.AsaprofessorofAnglo-Saxonin1930satOxford,TolkienwaspartofaninformaldiscussiongroupcalledtheInklings,whichincludedseveralwriters.ThegroupwassoonlisteningtochaptersofTolkien’simaginativework“TheHobbit”.

HobbitwasanameTolkiencreatedforalocalpeoplethatcouldbestbedescribedashalf-sizedmembersoftheEnglishrural(乡村的)class.Hobbitsliveinhillsideholes.Oneofthem,BilboBaggins,looksfortreasureswithagroupofdwarves(侏儒).Ontheway,hemeetsthetwisted,pitifulcreatureGollum,fromwhomheseesagoldenringthatmakestheholderinvisible.

OneofTolkien’sstudentspersuadedheremployer,publisherAllen&Unwin,tolookatadraft(草稿).Thechairmanofthefirm,StanleyUnwin,thoughtthatthebestjudgeforachildren’sbookwouldbehisten-year-oldson.Theboyearnedashillingforreportingbackthattheadventurewasexciting,and“TheHobbit”waspublishedin1937.
