Crypto-assetsarenotcoveredbytheCityregulator,theFinancialConductAuthority（FCA）,andtherearenoformalmechanismsforconsumerredressorinvestorcompensation.

Thecommitteearguesinthereportthatataminimum,regulationshouldbeintroducedtoaddconsumerprotectionandcountermoneylaundering.

Itsaidthatasthingsstood,thepriceofcrypto-assetswassovolatilethatwhilepotentialgainswerelarge,sotoowerepotentiallosses."Accordingly,investorsshouldbepreparedtolosealltheirmoney,"thecommitteesaid.

TheFCAsaid:

"TheFCAagreeswiththecommittee'sconclusionthatbitcoinandsimilarcrypto-assetsareill-suitedtoretailinvestors,andaswehavewarnedinthepast,investorsinthistypeofcrypto-assetshouldbepreparedtolosealltheirmoney."

ATreasuryspokesmansaid:

In2017,thepriceofabitcoinsoaredbymorethan900%,hittingapeakofalmost$20,000inDecember.Itspopularityhassincewaned,withonebitcoinnowpricedataround$6,270.

Thedigitalcurrencyemergedafterthefinancialcrisis.Itallowspeopletobypassbanksandusualpaymentprocessestopayforgoodsandservices.

LastyearJamieDimon,thechiefexecutiveofJPMorgan,saidbitcoinwasafraudandonlyfitforusebydrugdealers,murderersandpeoplelivinginplacessuchasNorthKorea.Hesaid:
