Thatnight,WeberwasjoinedbyKatherineEtchison,theCommission'sbatbiologist,foranemergencecount.Theycounted240,butabusyschedulemeanttheteamcouldn'treturnforasecondemergencecountuntilJuly18.“IwasveryeagertogetbackouttherebecauseIreallythoughttherewouldbesomethingbesidesbigbrownbats.IwasthinkingMexicanfee-tailedbats,whichwouldbeafirstforBuncombeCounty,andIwasrightbutthatwasn'tthebignews,”saidEtchison.

Theresearchersdecidedtodigaroundthecircularpit,roughly40cmwideand13cmdeep,andencasethewholegraveinplaster(石膏)soitcouldsafelybeliftedfromtheground.TheblockwastakentotheNationalMuseuminNairobiandontoaspecialistlabinSpainwherethematerialwasexcavatedfurtherandthenimagedwith3DX-rayequipment.Theimagesshowthatthechildwaslaidontheirrightsidewithkneestiedtowardsthechest.Theboneshadnotfallenapartinthegrave,leadingtheresearcherstosuspectthebodywaswrappedtightlybeforeburial.Datingfoundthebonestobeabout78,000yearsold,accordingtothestudypublishedinNature.
