ItisAugust1939，andagroupoffrightenedchildrenareboardingatrainatPrague’sWilsonStation.Theirheartbrokenparentsdonotjointhem.

InDecember1938，afriendaskedWintontocometoPraguetoaidpeople（5）whowereescapingfromtheNazis.InPrague，（6）Wintonsawpeoplelivinginterribleconditionsand（7）whoseliveswereindanger.HedecidedtohelptransportchildrentosafetyinBritain.Heestablishedanofficetokeeprecordsofthechildren，andthenreturnedtoBritaintofindtemporaryhomesforthem.Heuseddonatedfundsandhisownmoneytopaythe50poundsperchild（8）thattheBritishgovernmentrequired.ByAugust1939，Wintonhadsaved669children.

DuringWorldWarⅡ，WintonservedasanofficerinBritain’sRoyalAirForce.Heleftthemilitaryin1954.Hethenworkedforinternationalcharitiesandforvariouscompanies.Forthemostpart，hedidnot（9）mentionthechildrenhesaved，andhisactionssoondisappearedfrompeople’smemories.

Thatallchangedin1988（10）whenhiswifeGretefoundaforgottenjournalathome.Thejournalcontainedphotographsandnamesofthechildrenandaddressesofthefamilies（11）thattookthemin.Shesentthejournaltoanewspaper，andthatyearWintonwasseenontheBritishtelevisionprogrammeThat’sLife.Atonepoint，thehostaskedpeopleintheaudiencetostandup（12）ifNicholasWintonhadsavedtheirlives.AshockedWintonwatched（13）asthemajorityofpeoplerosetotheirfeet.Theprogrammebroughthisactionstopublicattention，andWintonbecamearespectedfigurearoundtheworld.

Later，Wintonreceivedvarioushonoursforhisachievement，includingaknighthoodin2003，andtheCzechgovernment’shighesthonour，theOrderoftheWhiteLion，in2014.
