ItisAugust1939,andagroupoffrightenedchildrenareboardingatrainatPrague’sWilsonStation.Theirheartbrokenparentsdonotjointhem.

NicholasWintonwasbornon19May1909inLondon,toGerman-Jewishparents.ThefamilylatertookBritishnationality.(3)Onleavingschool,WintonworkedinbanksinGermanyandFrance.HereturnedtoBritainin1931,(4)whereheworkedinbusiness.

InDecember1938,afriendaskedWintontocometoPraguetoaidpeople(5)whowereescapingfromtheNazis.InPrague,(6)Wintonsawpeoplelivinginterribleconditionsand(7)whoseliveswereindanger.HedecidedtohelptransportchildrentosafetyinBritain.Heestablishedanofficetokeeprecordsofthechildren,andthenreturnedtoBritaintofindtemporaryhomesforthem.Heuseddonatedfundsandhisownmoneytopaythe50poundsperchild(8)thattheBritishgovernmentrequired.ByAugust1939,Wintonhadsaved669children.

DuringWorldWarⅡ,WintonservedasanofficerinBritain’sRoyalAirForce.Heleftthemilitaryin1954.Hethenworkedforinternationalcharitiesandforvariouscompanies.Forthemostpart,hedidnot(9)mentionthechildrenhesaved,andhisactionssoondisappearedfrompeople’smemories.

Thatallchangedin1988(10)whenhiswifeGretefoundaforgottenjournalathome.Thejournalcontainedphotographsandnamesofthechildrenandaddressesofthefamilies(11)thattookthemin.Shesentthejournaltoanewspaper,andthatyearWintonwasseenontheBritishtelevisionprogrammeThat’sLife.Atonepoint,thehostaskedpeopleintheaudiencetostandup(12)ifNicholasWintonhadsavedtheirlives.AshockedWintonwatched(13)asthemajorityofpeoplerosetotheirfeet.Theprogrammebroughthisactionstopublicattention,andWintonbecamearespectedfigurearoundtheworld.

Later,Wintonreceivedvarioushonoursforhisachievement,includingaknighthoodin2003,andtheCzechgovernment’shighesthonour,theOrderoftheWhiteLion,in2014.
