摘要

美国小说家玛格丽特·米切尔的小说《飘》以南北战争为背景,以南方的社会生活为生活环境的全景社会小说。

小说全面展现美国南方社会风貌以及各色人物在巨大的社会变革中的命运变迁,通过展现不同人物在混乱复杂的社会环境中的命运变化,揭示了不同的性格所必然走向的不同的命运安排。

生动形象的刻画了斯嘉丽这一典型人物,给读者留下了难以忘怀的印象。

本文将浅谈时代背景对于人物性格形成的影响。

以小说里面的时代发展为线索,阐述了斯嘉丽这一人物在经受一系列生活的变故,打击之后的性格发展及变化。

GonewiththewindisagreatnovelbasedontheAmericanCivilWarastimebackgroundandthesouthernsocietyaslifebackground.ItfullydisplaysallthefeaturesofthesouthsocietyofAmericaandthegreatvicissitudesoffateofthefiguresunderthehugesocialchanges.Thenauthorshowsusthatdifferentcharacterswillleadthefigurestothedifferentending,especiallytheheroine,Scarlettwhoisavividfigureandmakesadeepimpressiononreaders.ThepaperisabouttheinfluenceofthetimebackgroundonScarlett’scharacterdevelopment.Inthispaper,thereistheanalysisofthetransformsofScarlett’scharacteraftersufferinganumberofmisfortunesoflife,aroundthedevelopmentoftimeinthisnovel.AnditwillshowhowScarlettchangefromapride,conceited,vainnobleladytoabrave,responsiblematuredwoman.

GonewiththewindisamasterpieceintheliteraryhistoryofAmerica.MargaretMitchell,theauthorofthegreatnovel,devotedtenyearsofherlifeintothecreationaboutthiswork.ThepieceisalsotheonlyoneofherworksthatwaspublishedwhenMargaretwasalive.ThenameofitcomesfromthepoetryofErnstDawson:

"Ihaveforgotmuch,Cynara!

1)Ithasbeensoldover30,000,000copiesallovertheworldfromthepublicationdatetonow.In1937,MargaretwasrewardedthePulitzerPrizebecauseofthenovel.Twoyearslater,themovieforwhichthenovelwasadapted,becamethebiggestwinnerinthe12thAcademyAward.

MargaretMitchellwasbornonNovember8th,1900inalawyerfamilyofAtlanta,Georgia.ShewasonceawriterofAtlantaJournalsince1922andduringthefollowing4yearstherewere129pieceswithsignatureandmorepieceswithoutsignaturebeingpublished.DuringtheAmericanCivilWar,AtlantausedtobepossessedbyGeneralW.ShermanoftheNorthUnion.Fromthenon,theCivilWarwasthehittopictalkedaboutbythecitizensfrequently.Margaret’sfatherwastheformerpresidentoftheHistoryAssociation.SoMargaretalwaysheardthediscussionofthewarbetweenherfatherandhisfriends,evenamongtheneighborsasshewasalittlegirl.When26-year-oldMargaretdecidedtowriteanovelaboutthewar,Atlantaofcausewasthebackground.

AmericanCivilWarisafamousandimportantwarbetweenthesouthandthenorthfromApril1861toApril1865.Thebourgeoisclassesofthenorthfocusedondefeatingthesouthandwhiletheslaveownersaimedatexpandingtheslaverytothewholecountry.Thecausesofthewarwerethecontradictionsbetweenthesouthernplantationeconomyandthenortherncapitalisteconomy.Andthen11southernstatesbrokeawayfromTheUnionforthereasonthatAbrahamLincolnaccededtothepresidentandthefoundationofanothergovernment-theConfederateStatesofAmericawhichwasledby“president”--JeffersonHamiltonDavis.ThentheCSAdroveouttheUnionarmywhichwasquarteredinthesouthandlaunchedthewarviatheBattleofFortSumter.SoPresidentLincolnorderedtoattackthoserebelliousstates.Thewarnotonlychangedthepoliticalandeconomiccircumstancesandledtotheabolishmentoftheslavery.Butalsoithadgreatinfluenceonnon-governmentcirclesinU.S.A.

Beforethewar,Georgiawasanewly-plowedandred-landslavestate.Itwasbeautifulandclassic.Theindustrialcivilizationwasfarfromthisland.Therewerenumerousmanorsandfarms.Womenwerelivingindependenceuponthemanpower.Theysufferedthedoublesuppressionfrommaleandthemselveswhichmadetheybeinanaffiliatedsocietypositionandunabletodecidetheirowndestiny.Butafterthewar,anewcultureofwomen’sliberationandequalitycameintothecitygradually.Theywerereborninthewarandthenfacedtheallthechallenges.

1.2Thepurposeofwriting

Inthisthesis,thewriteranalysestheinfluenceofthehistoricalbackgroundonthecharacter,Scarlett,inGonewiththewind.Scarlettisthemostcomplex,vividandchangefulfigureinthenovel.ShelivesalmostoppositelivesbeforeandaftertheAmericanCivilWar.SheisquitedifferentfromothersintheSouthofAmerica.Andthemainreasonthatleadstoherchangeisthewar.Beforethewarsheisaromantic,pureandcarefreeyoungladywhoisbelovedbyherparents.FatherisindulgenttoScarlettwhileMotherisstrictwithher.Thatwhatsheworriesaboutistheclothes,partiesandattentionfromothers,bothmenandwomen.However,thewaroccursandturnsherworldupsidedown.Thewarmakeshergothroughtrailsandtribulations.Andthenshegrowsupandmatures.Experiencingthewar,shebecomesthesupportofthenewfamily.Sheisresponsibleandstrong.Atthesametime,thewaralsoteachesherthecrueltyofthereality.Sheiscold,meanandmercenarybusinessman,too.Thechangeismysticalanduniqueatthattime.Soit’squiteworthmakingathroughinquiryintotheprocessofhowScarlettchangesherselftoadaptthemixtureofnewworldandoldworld.

 

2Scarlett’soriginalcharactersbeforetheWar

Scarlettwasaclear,vivid,rich,complexcharacters,theimageoftheenduringcharmofthereasonisthesuccessfulauthorofthecharactersinshape.Shewasapretty,pure,romanticgirlwhowasborninarichupper-classfamily.Thoughshehadmanydefectsasacommonnobleladylikepride,vanity,willfulness,shewasstillanattractivegirlbecauseofherbeautyandintelligence.Shelookedlikeafeminineandquietyoungladybutinfactshewastoughandcapricious.ThereasonthatcausedthecontraryresultwasthedifferencebetweenScarlett’sparents.Herfatherwasimpulsive,enthusiasticandreckless.Helikedadventureandstimulatingevents.Buthermotherwasinexcusable,mildandmannered.Scarlettwasthemixtureofthem.Sheinheritedherfather’sblood,butshewaseducatedbyhermother.ThatwasthereasonwhywhatScarlettdidwastotallydifferentfromwhatshethought.

2.1ThetypicalIrishcharacteristicfromherfather

Scarlett’sfatherwasatypicalIrishwhowasshrewdandworldly.Shehadfollowedherfathergenerousrough,informal,andbad-temperedcharacter.Theywerejustlikegoodfriendsathome.Whenthefathersawhisdaughterjumpingfences,hewouldblameScarlettbutnottellhermotherEllen.ThensodidScarlett.TheyhadthesamethoughtsthattheydidnotwantEllentobeangryandworried.

WhatScarlettalsolearnedfromherfatherwasthatshewasstrongandoptimistictofacethehardlife.Whenthewarbrokeout,shecouldgiveupthelavishlifestyleandgetherfeetbackonthegroundafteranumberofpsychologicalblowandtrauma.ShebelievedtheredearthofTarajustasherfatheroftensaid,“Inthisworldthereareonlylandandsun.Amen.”Shewasadamancy,self-confidentandthelandwasthemostbelovedinherlife.Scarlettwasgeneroustotheblackservants.Sheevengaveoneofherfather’swatchestotheservantasagiftafterherfather’sdeath.Andwhenthewarwasover,aslavecametoforashelter.Thefirstthoughtcametoherwastoprotecthim.Thosewereallaffectedbyherfather.

2.2Thenoblepersonalityfromhermother
