IntroductiontotheCourse
ThiscourseisdesignedforsecondyeartertiarystudentsofEnglishasaforeignlanguage.Itaimstodeveloptheirabilitytospeakwell,respondappropriatelyandclearly.Avarietyofactivitiesareusedtodevelopstudents’speakingandactivelisteningskills.
CourseDescription
ThiscourseisdesignedforsecondyearstudentsofOralEnglishasaforeignlanguage. IthelpsstudentstocommunicateeffectivelythroughpracticeinEnglishconversationandinthemoreformalclassroomdiscussionsandindividualandgrouppresentationssuchasinterviewsandpanelswhichareapartofuniversityeducation.Pronunciation,grammar,vocabularyandfluencyarestressedaswellasthefeaturesofthevariouskindsofdiscourseinwhichstudentswillneedtobeengaged.Pronunciationandgrammarcorrectionswillbegivenineveryclass.Vocabularysetsforeachtopicareused.Pacingandintonationarediscussedanddemonstratedtoimprovefluencywhenneeded.Elementsofthefourbasiclanguageskills(reading,writing,aswellasspeakingandlistening)areapartofeachclassastheydevelopbesttogetherinadultESLlearners.
Learningfocus
DuringthesecondyearoftheirstudiesinEnglishasaforeignlanguageintheSchoolofInternationalBusiness,studentsaresupportedtoexpandtheirunderstandingofwesterncultures,andtheirunderstandinganduseoftheEnglishnecessarytocommunicatewithsomeindependenceinarangeofsocialandacademiccontextsthroughtheuseoftopicsandconceptsfamiliartothemfromsocietyandtheirfieldsofstudy.Studentsareencouragedtolistentoandrespondtoinstructionsandexplanations,suchasanoutlineofthestepsofabasicresearchproject,ordiscussionofasharedlearningexperience.Activitiessuchasviewingashortfilmonatopicbeingstudied,oramodifiednewsbulletin,assiststudentsastheylistenforspecificpurposes;forexample,toidentifyandstatekeyinformation.Theyresearchandundertakeshortdiscussionsorpresentationsonfamiliartopicsinsmall-groupcontexts.Theylearnhowtoorganisetheirmoreformalspokentextsusingbasicstructuressuchasanintroduction,bodyandconclusion.Throughmodellingandrole-playtheylearnbasicstrategiestomaintainconnectionwiththeiraudience,includingeyecontactandtheuseofvisualaids.
Expectedoutcomes
Atendoftheirsecondyear,studentsshouldbeableto:

∙communicateeffectivelyinarangeofbasicacademiccontexts

NotesontheMarkingSystem
ThemarkingsystemattheSchoolofInternationalBusinessatDongBeiUniversityofFinance&Economicsrequiresthatstudentsachieveaminimummarkof60%ontheirfinalexaminationinordertopassthesubject.
Students,whoareineligibletositthefinalexaminationduetounauthorizedabsencesexceeding4butwhohaveattendedaminimumof65%ofclasses,andthosewhoobtainamarkbetween36and59%onthefinalexamination,havetherighttoapplytotakethemake-upexamination,whichtakesplaceearlyinthefollowingsemester.
Absences
Eachstudentisallowed4excusedabsences. Ifastudentmissesaclass,thenthatstudentneedstoprovidetheinstructorwithavalidexcusesignedbytheStudentAffairsOfficewithanaccompanyingredstamp.
Ifastudentmissesmorethan4classes,thentheinstructormustcontacttheadministration.

CharacteristicsoftheWesternClassroomtoBeCreatedinOurClassroom
InaWesternuniversityclassroom,studentsareexpectedtobeactiveparticipantsintheireducation.Studentstaketheinitiativeinansweringquestionsraisedbytheteacher.Theteacherrarelycallsonstudentsbyname.Studentsdonotneedtobeurgedtoasktheirownquestionsandsharetheirreactionstoideas,whethertheiropinionsarefavorableorunfavorable.Thereisageneralatmosphereofmutualrespect.Teacherslistentostudentsandstudentslistentoteachers--andeachother.Studentsaskforclarificationwhentheydonotunderstandsomething.Iftheysimplycannothearwhatissaid,theyaskthatitberepeated,perhapsmoreloudly.Studentstakenotesinclassaswellastakingnotesontheirassignedreadings.Studentsareexpectedtodrawontheirpreviouslifeexperienceandlearningandwhattheyarelearninginotherclassestomakesenseofwhattheyarelearninginanyparticularclass.Creativityisencouraged.However,understandingandcarryingout(fulfilling)anassignmentaccordingtoitsspecificationsisrequired.Responsibilityforattendance,involvementandtimelycarryingoutofassignmentsisunderstood.Inshort,studentsareexpectedtoactlikeactive,responsible,inquiringadults.IexpectmystudentsatDUFEtobeortobecomelikethis.Passivityisnotpermitted.
TeachersintheWesternuniversityclassroomareengagedinthelearningprocesswiththeirstudentsasknowledgeableguidestothesubject,notasdictatorswhochooseinformationtobememorizedandrequireittoberepeatedbacktothembystudents.Westernteachersknowthatthereisacertainamountofinformationthatneedstobelearnedbutcriticalthinkingabouttheinformationiswhatisessentialforlearningtotakeplace.Iwillgiveyouusefulinformationtohelpyoutobecomegoodorbetterspeakersandguideyouasyoupracticevariousformsofspeechusingthese“tools.”Myconstructivecriticismwillhelpyourecognizeandovercomeproblems.Iwillshowyouhowtohelpyourselvesandeachotherasyouspeaktogetherorcommentonandevaluateeachother’sperformances.Iexpectyoutocooperateaswellascompete.
