WhydoEarthquakesHappen?

Scientistsexplainthattheoutsideoftheearthismadeofanumberofdifferentplates.Forexample,atSanFranciscothePacificplatewhichismovingtowardsthenorthwestmeetstheNorthAmericanplate.ThePacificplateismovingveryslowly—at5.3centimetersayear.Sometimesthesetwoplatesstopanddonotmoveforyears.Thensuddenly,theyjumpandanearthquakeisfelt.Asaresultofthemovementoftheseplates,westAmericaneartheseahasalwaysbeenabadplaceforearthquake.Whenthe1906earthquakehappened,thePacificplatejumped5-6meterstothenorth.
