I'vebeenblownawaybythewholething.Infact,I'mleaving.(Laughter)Therehavebeenthreethemes,haven'tthere,runningthroughtheconference,whicharerelevanttowhatIwanttotalkabout.Oneistheextraordinaryevidenceofhumancreativityinallofthepresentationsthatwe'vehadandinallofthepeoplehere.Justthevarietyofitandtherangeofit.Thesecondisthatit'sputusinaplacewherewehavenoideawhat'sgoingtohappen,intermsofthefuture.Noideahowthismayplayout.
Ihaveaninterestineducation--actually,whatIfindiseverybodyhasaninterestineducation.Don'tyou?
Ifindthisveryinteresting.Ifyou'reatadinnerparty,andyousayyouworkineducation--actually,you'renotoftenatdinnerparties,frankly,ifyouworkineducation.(Laughter)You'renotasked.Andyou'reneveraskedback,curiously.That'sstrangetome.Butifyouare,andyousaytosomebody,youknow,theysay,"Whatdoyoudo?

Myonenightoutallweek."(Laughter)Butifyouaskabouttheireducation,theypinyoutothewall.Becauseit'soneofthosethingsthatgoesdeepwithpeople,amIright?
Likereligion,andmoneyandotherthings.Ihaveabiginterestineducation,andIthinkwealldo.Wehaveahugevestedinterestinit,partlybecauseit'seducationthat'smeanttotakeusintothisfuturethatwecan'tgrasp.Ifyouthinkofit,childrenstartingschoolthisyearwillberetiringin2065.Nobodyhasaclue--despitealltheexpertisethat'sbeenonparadeforthepastfourdays--whattheworldwilllooklikeinfiveyears'time.Andyetwe'remeanttobeeducatingthemforit.Sotheunpredictability,Ithink,isextraordinary.
Andthethirdpartofthisisthatwe'veallagreed,nonetheless,onthereallyextraordinarycapacitiesthatchildrenhave--theircapacitiesforinnovation.Imean,Sirenalastnightwasamarvel,wasn'tshe?
Justseeingwhatshecoulddo.Andshe'sexceptional,butIthinkshe'snot,sotospeak,exceptionalinthewholeofchildhood.Whatyouhavethereisapersonofextraordinarydedicationwhofoundatalent.Andmycontentionis,allkidshavetremendoustalents.Andwesquanderthem,prettyruthlessly.SoIwanttotalkabouteducationandIwanttotalkaboutcreativity.Mycontentionisthatcreativitynowisasimportantineducationasliteracy,andweshouldtreatitwiththesamestatus.(Applause)Thankyou.Thatwasit,bytheway.Thankyouverymuch.(Laughter)So,15minutesleft.Well,Iwasborn...no.(Laughter)

ButsomethingstrikesyouwhenyoumovetoAmericaandwhenyoutravelaroundtheworld:
Everyeducationsystemonearthhasthesamehierarchyofsubjects.Everyone.Doesn'tmatterwhereyougo.You'dthinkitwouldbeotherwise,butitisn't.Atthetoparemathematicsandlanguages,thenthehumanities,andthebottomarethearts.EverywhereonEarth.Andinprettymucheverysystemtoo,there'sahierarchywithinthearts.Artandmusicarenormallygivenahigherstatusinschoolsthandramaanddance.Thereisn'taneducationsystemontheplanetthatteachesdanceeverydaytochildrenthewayweteachthemmathematics.Why?

Ithinkthisisratherimportant.Ithinkmathisveryimportant,butsoisdance.Childrendanceallthetimeifthey'reallowedto,wealldo.Weallhavebodies,don'twe?

(Laughter)Truthfully,whathappensis,aschildrengrowup,westarttoeducatethemprogressivelyfromthewaistup.Andthenwefocusontheirheads.Andslightlytooneside.

They'rethepeoplewhocomeoutthetop.AndIusedtobeone,sothere.(Laughter)AndIlikeuniversityprofessors,butyouknow,weshouldn'tholdthemupasthehigh-watermarkofallhumanachievement.They'rejustaformoflife,anotherformoflife.Butthey'rerathercurious,andIsaythisoutofaffectionforthem.There'ssomethingcuriousaboutprofessorsinmyexperience--notallofthem,buttypically--theyliveintheirheads.Theyliveupthere,andslightlytooneside.They'redisembodied,youknow,inakindofliteralway.Theylookupontheirbodyasaformoftransportfortheirheads,don'tthey?
(Laughter)It'sawayofgettingtheirheadtomeetings.Ifyouwantrealevidenceofout-of-bodyexperiences,bytheway,getyourselfalongtoaresidentialconferenceofsenioracademics,andpopintothediscothequeonthefinalnight.(Laughter)Andthereyouwillseeit--grownmenandwomenwrithinguncontrollably,offthebeat,waitinguntilitendssotheycangohomeandwriteapaperaboutit.
Nowoureducationsystemispredicatedontheideaofacademicability.Andthere'sareason.Thewholesystemwasinvented--aroundtheworld,therewerenopublicsystemsofeducation,really,beforethe19thcentury.Theyallcameintobeingtomeettheneedsofindustrialism.Sothehierarchyisrootedontwoideas.Numberone,thatthemostusefulsubjectsforworkareatthetop.Soyouwereprobablysteeredbenignlyawayfromthingsatschoolwhenyouwereakid,thingsyouliked,onthegroundsthatyouwouldnevergetajobd
