Thirdly,Ireallyappreciatemyfamilyandfriends.Thelastyearofcollegeisanotherimportantturningpointinmylife.Idecidedtotakethepostgraduateexamination,sothatIcouldgoonfurtherstudyinmystudy.Inthisyear,myfamilyandfriendsgavemealotofencouragementandcare.Itiswhattheydoformethatmakememoredeterminedtopursuemygoalsinthedaysofpreparation.Atthesametime,Ithankmyselfforholdingontotheend.

Abstract

CharlesDickensisoneofthegreatestcriticalrealistsintheVictorianAge.HisnovelsofferamostcompleteandrealisticpictureoftheEnglishbourgeoissocietyofhisage.LittleDorritisonethemostfamouslongworkofCharlesDickens.

Thispapercomparesthechangesofcharactersintheirpersonalitiesinthenovel,LittleDorrit,inthefirstandsecondpartofthework.Inthefirstpart,thecharacters,whentheyarepoor,areputaroundtheMarsahlseaprison,thedebtor'sprison.Inthesecondpart,theybecomerich,andthestoryaboutthemisonthebackgroundofthesocialprison,theBritishsociety.Bothofthetwopartsprovethattheycannotbreakawayfromthecageofthecapitalistsociety.Infact,CharlesDickensislookingforwardtogettingridoftheshacklesofsociety.Hehopesthatthedifficultiesinhischildhoodcanbereleased,andthesocietycanmakegreatprogressandachievequickdevelopment.

Alloftheothermembers’misbehaviorinLittleDorrit’sfamilyshowedusapictureofthedarksideofthehuman’sinnerheart.Thisthesisisgoingtotalkaboutpersonalityofthecharactersintwodifferent“prison”inLittleDorrit.Throughanalyzingtheirmindstates,wecanrevealthementalstuporofthepeopleinthatage.Andthepurposeofthispaperismainlytoattractpeople’sattentioninourday.Allofusshouldlearnalessonfromit,andtrybesttogetridofthatkindofinconsistenceofpersonalityinourlives.

CharlesDickenssaysthatLittleDorritisamoreseditiousbookthanDasKapital.Inthisbook,Dickenstalksaboutalittlecharacterofthenovel,AmyDorrit.Shewasnotborntoagloriousfamilybecauseofherfather’sfinancialfallings.AftertheDorritsgotamountofmoneyandlefttheprison,allofthefamily,withtheexceptionofLittleDorrit,changedalotintheirdeepmind.

1.1IntroductionoftheAuthor

CharlesDickens(7February1812-9June1870)wasafamousEnglishcriticalrealismnovelistin19thcentury.Theauthorwas,inarealisticwritingstyle,fullofangertoexposetheupperclassandbourgeoishypocrisy,greed,humiliationandbrutality,andheshoweddeepsympathytothelowersociety,especiallytheplightofwomen.Hecreatedsomeoftheworld'smostmemorablefictionalcharactersandwasgenerallyregardedasthegreatestnovelistoftheVictorianperiod.Duringhislife,hisworksenjoyedunprecedentedfame,andbythetwentiethcenturyhisliterarygeniuswasbroadlyacknowledgedbycriticsandscholars.Hedescribedawakeningstrugglinginaseriousandprudentattitude,andhisnovelsandshortstoriescontinuedtobewidelypopularamongmen,childrenandtheelderpeople.

LittleDorritwastheeleventhnovelbyCharlesDickens,publishedin1857.Firstlyitwaspublishedinserials,from1855inDecemberto1857inJune,andittookatotalofnineteenmonthstofinishthisstory.InMay,1857,theseparateeditioncameout.Dickenswroteapreface.Inthepreface,herevealedthejoyofhavingsomanyreaders.

ThesalesvolumeofLittleDorritwasunprecedented.ThismasterpiecewastheimportantworkofDickensinhislateperiod,anditwasofgreatvalueforustounderstandthemiddleofthenineteenthCenturyBritishsociety, Britain'spoliticalcorruptionandhypocrisy,andthegreedoftherulingclassandthebourgeoisie.Thefalsehoodofthehigher societyandlowerpeople'spovertyarecompletelyunmaskedintheauthor'spen.

ThestoryofLittleDorritisverycomplicated,andithasbeencalledbycriticsasa"denseforestwithnumerousplots".TheheroineLittleDorrit’sfatherwasputinprisonformorethantwentyyears.LittleDorrit,whowasbornandraisedintheprisonnamedMarshalsea,wascalled"thechildoftheMarshalsea.”Sincethen,aroundthebirthofDorritandherfamily’sinheritanceofalargenumberofhandsomelegacies,theauthorcarriedoutaseriesofperplexingandconfusedplotandtherelationshipbetweenthecharacters.

BecauseofAmyDorrit’sfather’sfailureinbusiness,thefamilyowedahugedebtandforthisreasontheywereputintothedebtor'sprison.Inspiteofherhumbleoriginandhardlife,Amyhadakindheart,andshewasalwaysreadytohelpotherpeoplewhowereintroublearoundher,What’smore,shewasnotashamedofherpoverty.Attheageof21,AmywashidingfromherfatherthatshetookonthejobasaseamstresstoMrs.Clennam’sfamily,whereshemetheronlyson,Arthur.Fromthenon,shereversedherlifefate.ItwastoldindetailthatwhenArthurClennamreturnedtoEnglandaftermanyyearsabroad,hetookakindlyinterestinAmyDorrit,hismother’sseamstress,andintheaffairsofAmy’sfather,WilliamDorrit,amanofshabbygrandeur,longimprisonedfordebtintheMarshalsea.AsArthursoondiscovered,thedarkshadowoftheprisonstretchedfarbeyonditswallstoaffectthelivesofmanypeople.

Asformasterlyevocationofthestateandpsychologyofimprisonment,LittleDorritwasoneofthesupremeworksofDickens’maturity.AndLittleDorritembodiedthecharacteristicsofDickens'slaterworks:

theideologicalcontentwasmoreprofound,andtheabilitytocontrolthecharactersandplotscametobemoremature,itcouldyetberegardedasafinepieceofwriting.ThehappinessandbitternessoftheDorrit’sfamilyinstraitenedcircumstancesandthedistortionofthepeople’spsychologicalstatesaftermakingagreatfortuneovernightwerealwaysthecharacteristicsofthesatiricalnovelsofDickens.

2.APrisonNamedMarshalsea

AprisoncalledMarshalseareferredtoadebtor'sprison,locatedinthemiddleoftheLondonBridgeandtheSouthMainStreetofGeorgechurch.WhenDorrit'sfatherwasindebt,hisfamilywasputinprison.Itwasaprisonintherealsociety.Peoplewerelockedupinahighwallandlosttheirfreedom.People'sbodieswerebeingheldhere.But,despitethefactthatDorritwasstillinprison,hisfathertriedtokeephismanners.

2.1TheFatheroftheMarshalsea

ThewritergaveusthefirstimpressionofLittleDorrit’sfatherinthispart.“Hewasashy,retiringman;well-looking,thoughinaneffeminatestyle;withamildvoice,curlinghair,andirresolutehands—ringsuponthefingersinthosedays—whichnervouslywanderedtohistremblinglipahundredtimes,inthefirsthalf-hourofhisacquaintancewiththejail.Hisprincipalanxietywasabouthiswife.”(Dickens58)Itshowedustheimageofafragileman,suddenlyfromtherichintoapoor,inthefaceofsuchabiggap,hecouldnotacceptthisreality.Fromhisbodymovements,wecouldseehewasveryupset.

Realitygraduallymadethispersonbecomenumb.ThenWilliamDorritwasoneofthelongestservingprisonersinMarshalsea'sprison,andhewasproudtocallhimself"thefatheroftheMarshalsea,"toshowhisrespectablepositioninprison.Althoughheneveradmittedhisfailure,butinthed
