BirobegantoworkonhisinventionbuthesoonleftEuropeforBuenosAiresinArgentina,acountryinSouthAmerica,becauseoftheSecondWorldWar.BiroandhisbrotherGeorge,whowasachemist,begantoimprovethepen.Intheearly1940s,Birobegantoproducehisnewpen,thebiro.In1944,hesoldhisinventiontoanothercompany,whichbegantoproducethepenforBritainandAmerica.

Birowaspleasedthathispenwaspopular,buthedidnotgetmuchfromhisinvention.ThebirowaslatersoldtotheFrenchcompany,Bic,whichnowsellstwelvemillionpensaday.Birosankintoobscurityin SouthAmerica.Hisname,however,hasbecomefamousaroundtheworld.
