Unabletofindworkanywhereelse，HensontookajobinahatshopinWashington，D．C．Onedayin1887，amancameintobuyahat．Theman，RobertPeary，askedtheownerifheknewanyonewithexperienceatsea．PearywouldsoontraveltoSouthAmericafortheU．S．government．Heneededexperiencedmentoaccompanyhim．Theshopownerknewabouthisyoungemployee’sskillsandexperienceonoceanjourneys，soheintroducedPearytoHenson．
Usinghismap-readingandsailingskills，Hensonprovedhimselftobeaworthyandsmartseaman．PearysoonmadeHensonhisassistant，andtheybecameclosefriends．OnedayPearytoldHensonabouthisrealdream：
tobethefirstmantostandon“thetopoftheworld"attheNorthPole．HeaskedHensontohelphimmakehisdreamcometrue．Overthenextfiveyears，thetwoexplorersmadetwotripstogethertotheArctic．However，theywerenotabletoreachthepoleeithertime．Thecold，wind，andicewereworsethaneitherofthemhadeverimagined．
In1908，PearyandHensonwerereadytomaketheirfinalattemptatreachingtheNorthPole．Bothmenwereoverfortyyearsold．Theyearsofhardshipinthearcticcoldhadmadethemsufferalot．Thiswouldbetheirlastchance．WithfourInuitguides，theymadeamadrushstraightacrosstheicetowardthepo1e．Peary’sfeetwereinjuredandhehadtobepulledonadogsled．InApril1909．Henson’sinstrumentsshowedtheywerestandingattheNorthPole．TogetherHensonandPearyplantedtheAmericanflaginthesnow．
Inlateryears，RobertPearyandHensonweregreatlyhonoredfortheirachievements．Today，thetwofriendsandfellowexplorerslieinheroes’gravesnotfarapartintheArlingtonNationalCemetery．
