Twolessexpensiveandmoreflexiblealternativestocopperhavenowbecomeavailable.Oneistoruntelephoneservicesoverthesamesystemascabletelevision.Abreakthroughinlaserdesigninthelate1980’smadeitpossibletosendanaloguetelevisionpicturesalongopticalfibers.Sincethencablesystems,liketelephonesystems,haveincreasinglyacquiredbackbonesofopticalfiber.Addingtelephonytoanexistingcablesystemusuallycostsmuchlessthanextendingthecopper-wirenetwork.

“Iflocaltelecomsweretorebuildfromscratchtoday,theywoulddosomostlywithradio,atacostofabout$800persubscriber,”saysPeterHuber,MichaelKelloggandJohnThornein”TheGeodesicNetworkII,”a1993reviewofcompetitionintheindustryintheUnitedStates.Mobiletelephoneswillincreasinglycompetehead-onwithfixedsystems.Butthemostimportantinnovationislikelytobeadigitalwirelesslinkedtoasmallfixedradioantennainthehome,whichcanmakeextraordinarilyefficientuseoftheradiospectrum;unlikeamobilephone,theantennaisalwaystunedpreciselytothecorrectbasestation.
