Celie,theprotagonistandnarrator,isapoor,uneducated,fourteen-year-oldblackgirllivinginruralGeorgia.CeliestartswritingletterstoGodbecauseherfather,Alphonso,beatsandrapesher.AlphonsohasalreadyimpregnatedCelieonce.Celiegavebirthtoagirl,whomherfatherpresumablykilledinthewoods.Celiehasasecondchild,aboy,whomherfatheralsoabducts.Celie’smotherbecomesillanddies.Alphonsobringshomeanewwife,andcontinuestoabuseCelie.

Celieandherbright,prettyyoungersister,Nettie,learnthatamanknownonlyasMr.wantstomarryNettie.Mr.hasamistressnamedShugAvery,asultryloungesingerwhosephotographfascinatesCelie.AlphonsorefusestoletNettiemarry,andinsteadoffersMr.Johnsonthe“uglywomen”Celieasabride.Mr.eventuallyacceptstheoffer,forcingCelieintoadifficultandjoylessmarriedlife.NettierunsawayfromAlphonsoandtakesrefugeatCelie’shouse.Mr.stilldesiresNettie,andwhenheadvancesonher,sheflees.NeverhearingfromNettieagain,Celieassumesherdeath.
