Anopendifferentialisthemechanismthatreceivesthepowerfromthetransmissionusuallythroughadriveshaftandsplitsthatpowerintwoandsendsittotheleftandrightofthedrivenwheelsandallowsthemtorotateatdifferentspeeds.

 Theopendifferentialoftenreferredtoasjustadifferentialcanalsobeusedtosplitthepowerbetweenthefrontandrearwheelsinaall/fourwheeldrivevehiclesandthentwootherdifferentialscanfurthersplitthepowertotheleftandrightwheels.

 Theabilitytorotatebothdrivenwheelsatdifferentspeedsistheprimaryobjectiveofthedifferential,itseparatesthebothwheelsbyallowingthemtohavetheirownfinalshaftinsteadofonecontinuousshaftbetweenthebothwheels.

 Ifthereisavehiclethatisrequiredtoonlytravelinastraightlinethenadifferentialwouldnotberequired,thedriveshaftcouldbeconnectedtoasinglefinalshaft.Theproblemwithasingleshaftisthatitdoesnotallowthevehicletocornerproperly.Theouterwheelsrotatefasterthantheinnerwheelsandthelackofadifferentialdoesnotfacilitatethis.

 Thedifferentialmechanismishousedinsideofaround-ishmetalcasingwithanopeningatthefronttoconnectthedriveshaftto.Insideofthiscasingisalsolubricatedasanywhereelsewheremetalrubsonoragainstmetal.

 Insideofthecasethedriveshaftrotatesadiscusingteethontheedgeofthedriveshaftandthediscsimilartogears.Thisdisccanbeontheleftortherightsideontheinsideofthecasingandwhicheversideitsonitisattachedtooneofthesunwheels(similarinshapetothediscbutsmaller).

Theshafttobothwheelshasasunwheelinsideofthecasing. Bothsunwheelsareconnectedtoeachotherbytwoormoreplanetgearsandtheplanetgearsrotatefromanextensionoffthemaindisc.Allofthesecomponentsrotateasthevehiclemoves.

 Evenwithallofthesecomponentsthedifferentialallowsthetwoshaftstoeachhavehalfofthetorqueandhorsepowerandtheyrotateequallywhenmovinginastraightline.

 Whenthevehicleiscorneringtheinnerwheelrotatesslowerandoffersmoreresistance,thiscausestheplanetwheelstorotateonitsownaxisanditincreasesthespeedoftheouterbythesamepercentagethattheinnerwheelslowsdown.

 Alockingdifferentialisdesignedtobeusedindifficultsituationsduringoffroaddrivingasitisnotconstantlylocked.Thereisaswitchtolockthedifferentialforoffroaddrivingandtounlockitforregularasphaltdriving.Alockingdifferentialshouldneverbelockedoncethevehicleisbeingdrivenonapavedroadanditmaynotberequiredtobelockedonlightoffroading.

 Thereasonthedifferentialcan'tbepermanentlylockedduringregulardrivingisbecausetheleftandrightwheelsonthesameaxlerotatesatdifferentspeedsduringcorneringbecausetheouterwheelhasmoredistancetocoverandalockeddifferentialforcesbothwheelstorotateatthesamespeed.Ifbothofthewheelshaveadequatetractiontheouterwheelwillslipandthisputsastrainonthevehicleorthetransmissionmaybedamaged.

 Whendrivingoffroadinlowtractionconditionsthelockingdifferentialworkswellasinmanyoccasionsoneofthewheelsmaynothavemuchtractionandcaneasilyspintogetherwiththewheelwiththegrip.Thegroundinoffroadconditionsusuallyconsistofmud,sand,grassorlooseparticlessuchasgravelsoifawheelhastoslipitcanslipwithoutputtinganypressureonthevehicle.

 Itiscommonforadedicatedoffroadvehicletohavethreedifferentialsandallthreecanbelockingdifferentials.Oncethevehicleisanfourwheelorallwheeldrivetherewillnaturallybeadifferentialforthefrontandrearaxlesandthethirddifferentialwillbealongthedriveshaftbetweenthefrontandrearaxlesasthefrontandrearwheelsalsocovervariousdistancesduringcornering.
