WhenEkströmandcolleagueColinStarkanalyzedtheseismicdataassociatedwiththosemajorlandslides,theyrealizedthatcertaincharacteristicsoftheslumpswerecontainedinthegroundmotions—similartothewaythatresearcherscanuseseismicdatatoestimatethesizeofaquakeandthedirections.Forinstance,whenrockfallsoffamountainside,thepeakissuddenlylighter—so,accordingtoNewton'slawsofmotion,themountainspringsupwardandawayfromthefallingrock,causinginitialgroundmotionsthatrevealsomecharacteristicsofthelandslide.

Andbecauseseismicdataoffercluesabouthowlandslidesunfold,itmayhelpresearchersdevelopbettermodelsofhowlandslidesbehave.“Peoplerarelyseelargelandslideshappen;theytypicallyonlyseetheaftereffects，”Ekströmnotes.

Indeed,EkströmandStark'sanalysisrevealedthatasetoflandslidesthatfellontotheSiachenGlacierneartheIndiaPakistanborderinSeptember2010actuallyincludedsevenslidesthatoccurredoveraperiodof4days.“Ifwe'donlyseenthisdepositinthefield,we'dlikelyhavethoughtitwasformedbyoneortwolandslides，”Ekströmsays.
