Ofthe29largestknownlandslidesworldwidefrom1980through2012,groundmotionsfromthe27largest

weredetectedbyseismicinstrumentsthatwerepartofaglobalnetworkofinstruments.Seismicvibrationsproducedbytheothertwoslidesshowedupwellonregionalnetworks.

WhenEkströmandcolleagueColinStarkanalyzedtheseismicdataassociatedwiththosemajorlandslides,theyrealizedthatcertaincharacteristicsoftheslumpswerecontainedinthegroundmotions—similartothewaythatresearcherscanuseseismicdatatoestimatethesizeofaquakeandthedirections.Forinstance,whenrockfallsoffamountainside,thepeakissuddenlylighter—so,accordingtoNewton'slawsofmotion,themountainspringsupwardandawayfromthefallingrock,causinginitialgroundmotionsthatrevealsomecharacteristicsofthelandslide.

Andbecauseseismicdataoffercluesabouthowlandslidesunfold,itmayhelpresearchersdevelopbettermodelsofhowlandslidesbehave.“Peoplerarelyseelargelandslideshappen;theytypicallyonlyseetheaftereffects,”Ekströmnotes.

Indeed,EkströmandStark'sanalysisrevealedthatasetoflandslidesthatfellontotheSiachenGlacierneartheIndiaPakistanborderinSeptember2010actuallyincludedsevenslidesthatoccurredoveraperiodof4days.“Ifwe'donlyseenthisdepositinthefield,we'dlikelyhavethoughtitwasformedbyoneortwolandslides,”Ekströmsays.
